hip dysplasia in yorkies??

My aunt has a yorkie and she said that yorkies can get hip dysplasia because there good jumpers! I have a 3/4 yorkie and 1/4 poodle pup….should i be worried?

And is there such thing as dog insurance lol and how much would that cost? i dont want to ne stuck with an $8000 surgery fee if my dog get this type of problem

Okay, so I have a friend that recently bought byb dog. When I first saw the dog at 10 weeks old I noticed it had the straightest stifles I had ever seen on a German wirehair (not to mention its doesnt look like one). I am pretty sure the dog has hip dysplasia because of how it moves. But that isnt even the main issue.
This dog is in chronic, debilitating pain at 7 months old and she wont take him to the vet. It seems that all of his ligaments are not growing with his bones and it is getting worse. The pain started in his pasterns and is now in his spine and hips. It almost reminds me of the most severe case of pano that Ive seen in my entire life. She wont take my advice and crate rest the dog and she allows it to run around like a normal puppy. Within 5 minutes the dog is crying in pain. I am getting really tired of hearing about it. I have even gotten to the point that Ive told her to put the dog down if she is not going to provide it proper medical care.

If she were your best friend would you be angry with her? I have tried to tell her the risks of buying a byb dog, yet she just goes and gets a piece of crap dog without a contract or screening process.
I am not ditching the friend that I have had for 10 years because she is doing what she wants with her dog. She is an animal lover but just doesn’t realize the severity of the situation. She believes (like many other pet owners would) that the dog has growing pain and is afraid that if she goes to the vet she will be charged a ton of money to be told nothing. I am sorry but this person has helped me through the worst times in my life. I am not ditching my best friend… But I might start screaming at her soon.
Loki, Chetco, Fish… Thank you so much. It was nice to see a different perspective. I referred her to the website and she was so grateful for it. As much as I would love to sit down with her she lives 1000 miles away so all of my advocating has been over the phone and texts. Makes things difficult. I also want to clarify that I would pay for the vet care myself but I am a poor college student that owns NO dogs because I know that I cant afford care for them. Life is hard with no dogs :(

I’ve been searching for the “it” dog. For me that is temperment and personality. I have gone to a few shelters and even visited the pound a few times, the only dog that I felt I really wanted to take home has hip dysplasia. He’s 1.5 years of age and has already had hip surgery done on one side as well as knee surgery (to correct a luxated patella). I know that he needs meds every day and weight management, but what quality of life will he have? I know future surgeries are possible, but will he still develop crippling arthritis? Please any information/opinions (esp from folks who’ve had a dog with these problems) would be greatly appreciated!

Should I neuter my 1 year old dog?

I have a 13 Month old Australian Cattle Dog and I am considering getting him Neutered. He does not mark in the house(but does outside), but he does show aggressive behavior towards other dogs and I am beginning to become concerned i.e. Barking when he sees/smells other dogs (i live on the third floor and as his behavior has gotten worse i let him out less) and today he got into a fight with another male dog (fixed).

When we are out for a walk and he sees another dog he instantly starts growling and goes after the dog.

Also because he is an ACD I have fears about Hip dysplasia and there have been reports about an increase of hip dysplasia in neutered dog. Neutered dogs also have a higher risk of reactions to vaccinations, should I be concerned about that? just this month he had a very bad reaction to a vaccine.
I wish I could adopt more dogs, I actually live across the street from the shelter in my town, but unfortunately my apartment complex only allows 2 dogs, I have one as does my roommate.

As for the comment about reducing certain cancer, OF COURSE IT WOULD HE CANT GET TESTICULAR CANCER IF HE DOES NOT HAVE TESTICLES!

For the HD – One study showed the incidence of hip dysplasia increased to 6.7% for dogs neutered before 5.5 months compared to 4.7% for dogs neutered after 5.5 months

And actually the Vet I go to is an Idiot and said that neutering would fix all of his behavior problems (and I was like cutting my dogs balls off will make him go to bed when I do?)

But my primary fear for holding off on the neutering is because of my health problems, if anything happens to me he is going right back to the breeder (she lives just outside my town).
There are dogs in shelters because people do not understand the responsibility a pet requires. having a dog or cat is just like having a kid they take time effort money and love. and you cannot forget to feed them :)
Also the only way my dog will be contributing to the puppy population is if my health gets worse and he goes back to the breeder (which is an option).

My dog’s hip is hurting…?

well yesterday we got home (i was gone for about 3-4 hours) and my dog yelped as we walked in. he can walk ok but he wont move much. hes a very jumpy hyper dog and hes just layed around all yesterday and today. i rubbed on his hip and he yelped again. and he yelps every time he tries to jump on my bed. hes a welsh Britany spaniel mix (about 3 yrs). a few ppl mentioned hip dysplasia but he hasn’t done that really before yesterday. could it be something else? he was alone with my other dog. he doesn’t have any wounds but maybe they fought? hes a pit and he gets jealous sometimes but i dont see any signs of that and it wouldn’t be at his hip. can anyone help?…he def wasnt bitten. my other dog wont bite him when he gets mad he just runs into him like body slams him kind of. and they play fight too. he got into the trash twice yesterday so my first instint was stomach related?? i wanna take him to the vet i cant do anything right now though. does anyone have any idea what it could be?
LIKE I SAID i want to take him to the vet. its 11:30 there is nothing i can do right now. if your going to act ignorant dont bother answering the question u make your self sound like an a
hes not limping

Help with hip dysplasia and a torn ACL…?

My 3 year old mastiff “Bella” hurt her leg the other day. After the vet’s x-rays came back we discovered that not only had she torn her ACL in her right knee, but that she has severe hip dysplasia in her left hip. The best we can figure, she had relied on her right leg to compensate for the bad left hip- until the ACL gave out.

So far the vet has suggested 4k to fix the ACL, and 5k for the hip. We do not have the 10k or so to fix the issues, but do not want to put the dog down as she is a loved family member.

Does anyone have any ideas for a 3rd option beyond the surgery or putting her to sleep?

Thank you for any help you may offer us…

My 10.5 month old labs hips sound like they’re clicking when he walks. There are no other obvious signs of what I think may be hip dysplasia and vet says he couldnt find anything wrong with him whe he stretched his back legs, but the clicking is constant each time he walks. Occasionally his 2 back legs move at the same time when running but this seems normal when looking at other retrievers, and he moves in a snake like manner. He’s occasionally slower in running than other dogs but mainly smaller ones. Vet hasnt done an xray and charged me £70 to tell me nothing really wrong, bit lame in bottom of leg and to give him rest and painkillers for a week so am reluctant to take him back if its nothing. Any tips?

Rottweiler Hip dysplasia treatment help!!!?

OK, so my boyfriend and I are doing a last ditch effort to save our 10week old rottweiler. Our vet took x-rays and thinks he most likely had hip dysplsia (young i know!). Most of the signs are there…he has a funny walk in the back, he whines/yelps if we stretch his legs back and upwards. However he does not do the bunny hop….he runs crooked actually and he is very playful and active. So we are taking him to the specialist today so he can look at the xrays to really see if he has HD. Our vet couldnt say for sure because of all the cartilidge a puppy has. Surgery is not an option for us at this point. We cannot afford it, nor can we afford to take the time off work to help our little guy recover. If it is HD, does anyone know of any remidies which are not surgical? Also, does anyone know any rottweilers or other big dogs who have lived pain-free with HD?
We are deperate….the pet store (i know…..) wants to take him back on Wednesday and we cannot bear the thought of strangers taking him and putting him down. PLease help ASAP!!
Just because we cant afford surgery doesnt mean we shouldnt have a dog. In fact we have 2 puppies. We are paying tons of money to have him checked out. We are hoping this is not HD. Believe me…..if we could afford the surgery we would. The most important thing for us is that he is not in pain. I have heard great things about glucosamine that will help to strengthen the muscles and reduce or eliminate pain. We have searched every avenue for our little guy.

mah dog is having issues!!!?

okay, so, its kinda a weird question… I have lab/hound mix thats getting a bit on the old side. He is eight years old. He’s really playful and energetic, yet he was having some problems with his hip. So, we took him to the vet and they ran tests. But all the information we got back was that he has crystals in his pee and that he should take some treats that would help with his joints. We asked the nurse what the treats were for and what the “pee crystals”, as they phrased it, would indicate but she was kinda useless.

So, I have two questions. 1: has anybody given their dog these treats or are they just a load?
2:What do these “pee crystals”(ew) indicate? Could something be wrong with his kidneys??

Serious answers please! And any advice from someone with a dog with hip dysplasia?

Experience w/ Hip Dysplasia or osteonecrosis?

Just took my 8-month old Golden Ret. pup to vet for problem with rear right leg. Since last Thursday has shown some bunny-hopping, stiffness in that leg, and occasionally the leg will fall out from under her on slippery surfaces or on stairs.

Vet wanted to hold off on x-rays. He said that if it is HD it will show up soon in the left leg. Otherwise he thinks it is some trauma she got, probably while playing (worst case scenario would be osteonecrosis where a portion of the bone starts to die). Instructions were no playing with other dogs and short leashed walks…. if it gets worse or does not improve after 2 weeks call him and we’ll go from there.

Has anyone had a similar experience?
