Dog Arthritis and Ibuprofen?

Question by Devil’s Advocate: Dog Arthritis and Ibuprofen?
My 10 year old English Cocker is showing early signs of arthritis; after a 20 min walk, he has a little trouble getting up and limps on his front right leg.
A friend suggested I give him Ibuprofen, which has been shown to help with Dog arthritis. Can anyone confirm this and how much a dosage to administer if this claim is true.

No! It is not safe. Call your vet they will tell you what you can use for the dog.

Question by Love’s Excelling Way: Do dogs in agility shows/competitons get arthritis later in life because of all the jumping?
I’m just wondering because I was thinking of getting my dog into it but am worried that the overuse of joints will cause arthritis later in life, like with human athletes. Do any of you know?
Thank you! :)

No – they are probably less likely because they stay fit and don’t get overweight which does put them at risk. To protect from overuse, train your dog gradually (just as you would do if you were getting in shape for a sport) and go slow with a puppy that still has developing joints.

Glucosamine for a dog without arthritis?

Question by Mich: Glucosamine for a dog without arthritis?
I have a 7-month old akita male, and this breed is very prone to joint problems, especially hip dysplasia. I was wondering is it a good idea to give him glucosamine supplements to keep his joints healthy and potentially prevent any future joint problems?

Answer by Mutt Mommy
It’s a great idea. I use it because my dog has a knee condition, but I think it should always be used in large breeds as a preventative.

Is there anything I can give my dog for arthritis pain?

Question by anie*: Is there anything I can give my dog for arthritis pain?
She’s a medium sized Siberian husky, almost 10 years old.
I remember seeing a commercial for a tasteless, colorless substance that you put in your pets water bowl and it helps with arthritis pain, but I don’t remember the name of it, does anyone know?

Speak to your Vet about a medication called Rimadyl or another like it. This is a prescription med. Also, you can give your dog a Glucosamine/MSM supplement that is over the counter. We order Synovi/MSM chewables from KV Vet Supply.

No, it is best to check with a vet first, because some ingredents in human drugs are not good for dogs, others may be, ask the vet and then see if you can get the human drug form

Is Magnesium Ascorbate Vitamin C ok for dogs?

Question by Downrock: Is Magnesium Ascorbate Vitamin C ok for dogs?
My dog has arthritis in her hind legs and I’m trying Freedom to move Recovery SA to see if helps at all. One thing that worries me though is that it contains Vitamin C in the form of Magnesium Ascorbate. I know Asorbic Acid type Vitamin C can cause problems for dogs kidneys and livers. Is Magnesium Ascorbate somehow different or does it cause the same problems?

The best place to find that kind of information would be the pharmacy at a major animal hospital. You can call them, and they should be able to tell you.

Question by john: Can I give Aleve to my 120 pounds, older dog – (arthritis )?
I’d would appreciate an answer from the common sense vet ONLY
Thank you in advance.
Please, if you are not a vet and an honest one don’t respond

Answer by Jessica
Alright I’m not a vet but I do work with dogs and have experience.
Honestly giving your dog Aleve is probably not the best choice considering it is not designed for dogs. There is probably a special pain med that you can find specially designed for dogs.

When people suffer from arthritis and joint pain?

Question by J. P.: When people suffer from arthritis and joint pain?
Why is it not commonly known that Glucosamine sulfate works the best? Is because the pharmaceutical
industry doesn’t want people to know? Glucosamine has also been used for many years by veterinarians to treat arthritis in dogs, horses and other pets.
