Question by Callie M: Does anyone know how I can find a canine swimming pool in Los Angeles for my arthritic dog?
I have just moved back to West Hollywood from Louisville, KY. My dog was swimming 3 times a week there at a veterinary clinic to improve his arthritis. I haven’t been able to find water therapy for dogs here and am hoping someone can direct me to the right place.

Must be a California thing. We don’t have canine swimming pools on the east coast!

Question by kimkamm66: Elderly dog, female, terrible symptoms, paralysis of bag legs lasting mins?
This is an odd case, and I apologize for coming here vs. taking my dog BACK TO THE VET, but between her age and her fear, just getting her there is a Traumatic experience and takes it toll (plus, I’m broke! with guilt) BUT am soooo hoping someone here may know something of these symptoms, as xrays have not been able to diagnose this problem, as well as her testing negative for LYME disease. These tests having had paid for and done to date.

Symptoms: Back legs literally give out, while she looks as if she’s going to roll on her back (she’ll use a wall if possible to lean on or if we’re available, we’ll hold her or try to get her to lay down) This lasts for seconds to several minutes, almost as if episodes, knowing only from xrays she has signs of arthritis (she’s 14! of course she does) Note, it almost seems neurological to me, as her owner, but not being a medical professional, I cannot diagnose this but seem to notice it’s scary to her, if not a little painful, and I’m thinking or wondering what this could be and that brought me here. Why I haven’t come sooner, as I notice some people are amazing with helping others, I do not know.

I hope to hear some logical answers, as opposed to guessing, which I’m capable of doing of course. She doesn’t have tons of time left and I just want the time she has to be less strenuous.

Thank you.

Sorry, she needs a professional evaluation from a VET who can examine her in person.

All we can do from here is guess wildly.

Question by Martina: What are the best treatments for canine arthritis? What has worked for you?
The dog is a 12 year old purebred Yellow Lab.
Thanks for your advice! I agree with making him comfortable. He has all his food/water elevated. He has a choice of orthopedic beds to rest on. He takes everything at his own pace. I have been using DGP vitamin supplements and the vet recommended Tramadol (sp). He isn’t injured, he is just old. He can’t take Rimadyl because he’s been on potassium bromide for seizures since he was 6 months old. Thanks, again for sharing!!!

I had a border collie/retriever mix that around age 11 started having significant problems with arthritis. A combination of Rimadyl, glucosamine supplements and soft bedding (which she already had) was literally life-changing for her. Rimadyl has side effects and dogs need to be monitored while on it – but I truly believe this drug extended her life several years. She lived a happy life to age 15.

Q&A: Canine Arthritis Relief?

Question by Annie G: Canine Arthritis Relief?
My beloved 11 yo Spinone is getting stiff in her shoulders, sometimes her rear slides out. She is 80 lbs, and very happy + healthy otherwise. Cleared for hip dysp as a youngster.

She had valley fever but titre-d down and all has been well for a long while.

She would not jump off the bed on Monday, and could not reach a treat on the floor. I elevated food + h20, still had some Rimadyl which vet said to give, and She seems quite fine now. I will decrease dose over next few days + see how she does.

Rimadyl does work. Cleared it up quickly–about 1+1/2 days.

Question: I’d like to know what folks are supplementing, ie what is working for you. She was on Cosequin DS, but I have run out and now wondering if something might be better.
Syn-flex? Shark cartilage? Green lipped mussells? CostCo TriFlex? There is so much out there?

She got very little exercise this summer as it was unbearably hot, and now I am afraid to walk her too much as I don’t want to exacerbate her pain.

Suggestions?
Also wondering about how much walking she can handle…how should I gauge this? Don’t want to go too hard and find her out of it the next day…

How do you think my Novel is going on so far?

Question by Beanie: How do you think my Novel is going on so far?
I sort of got the Idea off of the Warriors series, but isn’t quite the same.

Prowlers: The New Twilight is a book including Dogs and Cats, whom of which live in Human dens [Human homes], while others live in the forest, prowling it and catching woodland prey. However, this isn’t all that meets eye. The first Prowlers book is set in the late nineties, approximately 1999, and follows the main character, Rose, a cat, on her adventures in the Wild. Meanwhile, the second main character, Artie, a Blue Merle Great Dane is followed from a Giant Mammals’ den into the forest where he joins a pack of Dogs and struggles to survive in this new life, but is it really what he wants? Or will he return to his past to the life he once lived with his soft Giant Mammals? Both Rose and Artie started off their lives in very different ways, but as times goes on, are they in the same boat?

Now for how far I’ve gotten:

C h a p t e r ONE

Whimpering, the dog stepped forth in pain, pushing himself onward. His wounds bled as the streetlights shone brightly on his black and white pelt. Suddenly, eyes appeared from corners all around, and dogs gathered around him. Helplessly he yelped for help, hoping that someone other would be able to save him from this treachery.

Shaking and yelping, the dog realized that none of what he had just witnessed had been true. Shrugging all of his worries off, he pushed himself up into a sitting position and slowly began to clean himself.

“Artie!” a voice barked from the door. “Artie, come quick!” the voice sounded again, this time along with the sound of pawing at the door. “I’m coming! But please, quiet down until I get there!” the dog growled and padded over to the door. He was such a large breed that he didn’t have to wait to see the other dog standing in front of the door. Crouching through the plastic dog door, he nudged his friend to move. “Artie, Evy has had her puppies!” the other dog spoke quickly and ran off down the street, toward a little pale yellow house on the corner. Quickly, Artie bounded after his friend, his pads slightly aching from them pounding on the road’s hard, rough surface.

Finally… Artie thought as the yellow house began to appear from behind the trees. Suddenly a jolt of fear prickled through Artie’s spine. He was being taken and dragged by a couple of dogs, which were making grunting and scoffing noises. Even so, they seemed no threat at the moment, as he wasn’t injured. Time went by quickly, and he was awoken by more dogs. Artie was in a peculiar place when he awoke and he face was flooded with shock and confusion. “Where am I? Who are you?” Artie growled, his tail lowered and eyes glaring threateningly at the pack of dogs laid all around him. Even though he knew he wouldn’t be able to take those many dogs down by himself, he hoped his behavior would threaten them enough to tell him what he wanted, and possibly let him go. What do they want with me? The Great Dane thought to himself, though he still hid his fear by continuing his threatening stance.

All around him the dogs were beginning to emerge from their dens made from split rocks, and bushes, along with many other things he did not often see. These dogs began to come forward with confused and puzzled faces, but once the face of a Pure White dog -the color of fresh snow- emerged from one of these dens, they stopped and slunk back a few steps. “Calm down, Bonehead!” the white dog grunted, watching the amused faces of the pack ripple through the area. “I’ve been watching you for days. You have great speed and agility, which is something you’d need to be part of the Pack. You’ve shown great promise, and now I’d like to invite you join us.”As she spoke, head and tail held high, she then dipped her head approvingly, awaiting Artie’s answer.
“… I-I… I don’t know!” Artie panted, letting his aggressive stance fall and stood normally with a puzzled face, “I don’t know anything about you. Let me think about it, a-and I’ll get back to you tomorrow” he said, slinking off quickly through the bushes, with his nose to the ground, trying to find his way back home.

———-

It might not be the greatest to start off, but it’ll get better.
I’m open to constructive criticism, just as long as none of it is rude.

Thanks!
Thank you ^^~

What’s wrong with my dog?! PLEASE HELP!?

Question by John: What’s wrong with my dog?! PLEASE HELP!?
Okay, he’s a rat terrier, 8 years old. Today I was playing fetch with him and he seemed a little slower and he hopped a bit, trying not lift his left hind leg. Then, everyday when i feed him he gets so excited and he jumps really high up and down, today he did that but then quickly yelped and stopped. He ate just fine, ate everything in about 2 minutes so eating isn’t the problem. Now, about two hours later he seems weird. Like usually right now he’s in his bed asleep, but he’s following me. He keeps his butt low and his ears back as he follows me. I don’t want to pet him because if he’s in pain he might be aggressive. Just testing to see what it was I asked him to sit, but it took him forever, like he only sat because I told him to, he really didn’t want to. And as another test I told him to go to bed (his bed is in his crate, and he has a lot of room in his crate) and he walked into his crate, lifted his back leg, and walked out. I’m really starting to worry, I know rat terriers are prone to arthritis later in life, could this just be some join inflammation, will it just pass? Please help. I’m really worried, I’ve had him since I was twelve, now I’m twenty.
By taking him to the vet, is that urgent, like right away, or would it be able to wait a day or two?
The reason i don’t want to take him to the vet now is that the nearest vet is a 2 and half our drive from here. And Buster, my dog, gets really nervous in the car, he thrashes and kicks and bucks, and I know that’ll make whatever it is even worse. So, for at least tonight, what can I do to help him?
I called the vet and they told me to put a Baby Aspirin in peanut butter and give it to him. An hour later he seems as though nothing happened. He’s asleep in his bed now. Thanks everyone, I’ll still take him to the vet tomorrow though. Again, thank you all!

He needs to see a vet about this. Regardless of what it is, it will need something only a vet can give you. He probably either tore something, or it is inflammation that will need medication.

Putting my sweetheart to sleep?

Question by Lyle: Putting my sweetheart to sleep?
I had to put my angel to sleep today, she was 18y/o and had terrible arthritis.Today she couldn’t get up,and when I looked into her face I could dee how much pain she was in.My wife and I took her to the vet and he agreed that euthanasia would be the best thing we can do for her.So we laid her on the table and put her favorite pillow under her head, telling her what a good girl she was. When the vet gave her the shot she was so brave, didn’t even whimper. She looked me in the face and I could see the relief in her eyes. Right before she passed she kissed my wife, then me on the chin.I know it was for the best, but it hit me so hard.My wife got me Lady(my dog’s name) on our first anniversary and she has been our baby for the last 18 years.I didn’t want to cry in front of her,I didn’t want her to feel anything but my love, but as soon as her eyes closed I was sobbing.Has anyone else ever felt so lost after losing their pet?Any suggestions on how to make myself face the day without my angel?

Question by muzik: My dog is crying and whimpering when I touch his chest area..?
So 2 days ago I started to notice he wasn’t running around and going crazy as much. He usually sleeps on my bed and when i come home he jumps down, but I noticed.. he’s a afraid to jump down.. and sometimes when he’s sleeping he would just scream and cry.. As the owner.. i knew something was wrong.. So i started to check areas, where it could be hurting him.. and On his right side of his leg.. well upp chest near the join of his right top leg… when I touch it.. he screams like hell.. I don’t know if a bone has been crushed or whether there’s chest pain.. but obviously there is pain.. and somethings wrong.. Would surgery be alot if there was a problem with his bones or etc.?

Best answer:

Answer by Spaz-Tic76
One step at a time. He may have been bitten by something. He may have just pulled a muscle. Maybe he has dislocated or broken something but, it sounds to me like muscle strain. IF he has broken bones, it could cost between $ 500 & $ 1500 to reair depending on how bad the injury is. I would just take him for a check up. Let the vet decide what is happening. Hope he is ok.
