Q&A: Any professional trainers online? My dogs are fighting nonstop, and I’m desperate for a solution?
Question by Diana: Any professional trainers online? My dogs are fighting nonstop, and I’m desperate for a solution?
Please, I need advice from someone who has been able to solve this problem with proven success ONLY!!!
I have 4 dogs, 2 M chihuahas (1 11yo, 1 4yo), 1 toypoodle F (11 yo), one jack russell F (ALPHA, 11 yo). Staying with me temporarily are two shelties F (2 and 4 yo) while my daughter is waiting to get stationed in the Army.
My jack attacks the sheltie. Not playing. Not just fighting. She wants to KILL! She has never displayed aggression before. Something the Sheltie does sets her off and she attacks. I have a very hard time separating them. Lately, it’s getting worse. 1 attack per week for the past three weeks. I no longer can afford the vet bills and am treating the wounds at home as best I can. Sheltie’s butt gets the worse of it. Punctures, crushing deadening tissue, causing HUGE gaping, oozing wounds, taking forever to heal. This type of wound has happened twice, just two days ago is the last time.
I have tried the soft muzzles, which do work, but she hates it and spends all day trying to get it off. That’s not a long term solution but I do have it on her all the time now, she’s miserable. I even was so desperate I bought a shock collar, thinking when she attacks, I will shock the **** out of her, and she will associate biting with pain herself. Yeah, I hit that button so many times at full strength, and it didn’t do ONE thing. Nothing. There is NO heading off the attacks, there is NO warning, nothing.
The sheltie rolls over, screams and takes it. She has never tried to ever defend herself. One of the other chihuahuas even tries to join the attack as they get in a frenzy. Luckily, a swift hit is all he needs to redirect his attention as he’s small.
As the shelties aren’t staying here permanently, I don’t want to put the jack down. I just need to hold on til April.
Can you have their canines removed so they don’t cause damage? I can’t find “basket muzzles” in stores, has anyone tried them, do they work?
Any suggestions? Much appreciated.
BTW, ALL dogs spayed and neutered, so that is not the problem. I’ve had dogs my whole life. I am well aware of alpha, dominance, etc…
I will put her down if I have to. I am out of time and patience. This is my last chance before I take her in next week. Thank you.
Thank you Cheryl… money is a huge issue right now in this economy. I can’t imagine how much something like that would cost. Do you have an opinion on the basket muzzles? More comfortable than the meshtype sold at stores? Thanks again.
I could head off the attack, if I saw any sort of warning. This happens in an instant! It’s like the Jack is learning to wait for an opportunity, plotting, and attacking. I’ve never seen anything like it. Again, she has never gotten into fights with any of the other 6 dogs we’ve had over the past 11 years.
One would “ASSUME” the sheltie would learn to stay away from her, develop some sort of fear and keep her distance. I don’t know if dogs can actually be “stupid?” but even after she is recovering from a full fledged attack, she has no fear of the Jack. None. It’s crazy.
As for seperating them permanently…no. Confining one to a kennel 24/7 is not an option. I couldn’t do that.
