Question by Diana: Any professional trainers online? My dogs are fighting nonstop, and I’m desperate for a solution?
Please, I need advice from someone who has been able to solve this problem with proven success ONLY!!!

I have 4 dogs, 2 M chihuahas (1 11yo, 1 4yo), 1 toypoodle F (11 yo), one jack russell F (ALPHA, 11 yo). Staying with me temporarily are two shelties F (2 and 4 yo) while my daughter is waiting to get stationed in the Army.

My jack attacks the sheltie. Not playing. Not just fighting. She wants to KILL! She has never displayed aggression before. Something the Sheltie does sets her off and she attacks. I have a very hard time separating them. Lately, it’s getting worse. 1 attack per week for the past three weeks. I no longer can afford the vet bills and am treating the wounds at home as best I can. Sheltie’s butt gets the worse of it. Punctures, crushing deadening tissue, causing HUGE gaping, oozing wounds, taking forever to heal. This type of wound has happened twice, just two days ago is the last time.
I have tried the soft muzzles, which do work, but she hates it and spends all day trying to get it off. That’s not a long term solution but I do have it on her all the time now, she’s miserable. I even was so desperate I bought a shock collar, thinking when she attacks, I will shock the **** out of her, and she will associate biting with pain herself. Yeah, I hit that button so many times at full strength, and it didn’t do ONE thing. Nothing. There is NO heading off the attacks, there is NO warning, nothing.
The sheltie rolls over, screams and takes it. She has never tried to ever defend herself. One of the other chihuahuas even tries to join the attack as they get in a frenzy. Luckily, a swift hit is all he needs to redirect his attention as he’s small.
As the shelties aren’t staying here permanently, I don’t want to put the jack down. I just need to hold on til April.

Can you have their canines removed so they don’t cause damage? I can’t find “basket muzzles” in stores, has anyone tried them, do they work?

Any suggestions? Much appreciated.

BTW, ALL dogs spayed and neutered, so that is not the problem. I’ve had dogs my whole life. I am well aware of alpha, dominance, etc…
I will put her down if I have to. I am out of time and patience. This is my last chance before I take her in next week. Thank you.
Thank you Cheryl… money is a huge issue right now in this economy. I can’t imagine how much something like that would cost. Do you have an opinion on the basket muzzles? More comfortable than the meshtype sold at stores? Thanks again.

I could head off the attack, if I saw any sort of warning. This happens in an instant! It’s like the Jack is learning to wait for an opportunity, plotting, and attacking. I’ve never seen anything like it. Again, she has never gotten into fights with any of the other 6 dogs we’ve had over the past 11 years.

One would “ASSUME” the sheltie would learn to stay away from her, develop some sort of fear and keep her distance. I don’t know if dogs can actually be “stupid?” but even after she is recovering from a full fledged attack, she has no fear of the Jack. None. It’s crazy.
As for seperating them permanently…no. Confining one to a kennel 24/7 is not an option. I couldn’t do that.

Can anyone recommend a good arthritis medication?

Question by SurrahB’s: Can anyone recommend a good arthritis medication?
I have a 8 year old Pit Bull/Cattle dog mix, she’s a three legged dog, missing her entire front left leg. With in the last couple of years she has started developing arthritis, which only seems to cause her little discomfort every now and then. She is currently on Deramaxx, which I give to her irregularly as she is not a real active dog, she probably gets 1 to 2 pills a week. However, when I do give her the medication it really doesn’t seem to make a difference, she seems just lazy and slow to get around as she had before I gave her the medicine. She definitely has her good days and her bad days, but I was just wondering if there was any medication or even home remedy’s that anyone can recommend that will make her bad days a little more comfortable?? I was also thinking about getting her a tempur-pedic dog bed, to help relieve the pain of her arthritis. Any “reasonable” advice will be greatly appreciated.
It was prescribed for just as needed. My vet said I didnt need to be giving it to her daily as she gets along really well for being 8 and having three legs.

Get your dog down to a weight that is on the lower end of normal for the breed. You should also be giving a glucosamine supplement.

Q&A: Need Vet Advice. (Dog with difficulty eating)?

Question by Windsurfrush: Need Vet Advice. (Dog with difficulty eating)?
I’m not quite sure where to start, so please bare with me…
My dog started limping on her front left leg 7 months ago… it progressively got worse. I took her to several vets, and they thought it could be arthritis or a weak nerve. Rimadyl and vitamins were the only meds given to me. After 6 months, a vet found a mass in her armpit region… he thought it was a tumor of the brachial plexus. I took her to another vet and he said he thought it was inflammation… so he was giving my dog two injections every couple of days: a steroid and NSAID anti-inflammatory injection (he obviously wanted to prove the other vet was wrong, as he did not feel this mass when he first examined my dog… and the injections he gave totally contradicted one another) The mass grew very big during the next couple of weeks… it was about the size of a small mandarin and it was in her armpit region and stuck to her chest. It was very hard to the touch. Both of the vets determined it was cancer and did not want to take a biopsy because they thought it would spread. They did not want to operate either because they did not have the ‘know-how’ to do this operation. The second vet said that he was sure it was a malignant cancer, stuck to her thorax, and that only a professor in a university abroad could do the operation, for research purposes only. They did not want to help my dog at all! I live in Cyprus, and there aren’t that many vets on the island. So anyway… a couple weeks later, my dog was having problems eating… she would reverse sneeze after she ate something, as if there was an obstruction somewhere… and she would become very scared. It happened every time she ate something. It gradually got worse until she was suffering from severe respiratory distress. I couldn’t go to the other two vets because they were reluctant to help my dog and they were just doing guess work without actually diagnosing the problem (biopsy) She looked like she was going to die (couldn’t breathe well, her tongue was turning blue) so I rushed her to another vet an hour away from where I live.He was my last hope. He gave her valium to relax, put an IV drip on her.. and operated on her later in the evening. He found a huge abscess! That was the mass… and all the other vets that examined my dog were too scared to touch her. I have been giving her two types of antibiotics, and an anti-inflammatory pain killer. However, she still does the reverse sneezing whenever she eats and it worries me sick. I think she has problems swallowing, because I can see the muscles in her neck spasm… and it makes a sound sometimes… very weird. Does anyone know what could be causing this? How did the abscess bring about reverse sneezing symptoms whenever she eats? It’s making her scared to eat. Her leg is completely lame now… I doubt she will be able to use it again as she drags her paw along the floor. I’ve also noticed that her left pupil is slightly smaller than her right one. I think the abscess was caused by a cat bite or lacerations on her paw pads.

Thankyou in advance.
I forgot to mention that she has an open wound on her chest that I rinse with betadine three times per day… and I apply bactroban cream inside the wound before covering with a gauze. The vet told me to do this so the infection can clear.
Yes, full body x-rays were done – all appeared normal. Please don’t be so judgemental. I have taken my dog to five different vets! I live in Cyprus and there aren’t any universities here with veterinary departments.

Answer by Single Worker 1230
Were x-rays done? Has the abscess been cultured? Has any part of the mass been sent in for a histopathology to check for tumor cells? Your dog still could have a Mediastinal tumor which is pushing on her esophagus. These are tumors that originate in the chest and many times spread outward. Sometimes they get so big that they abscess in the middle because of lack of blood supply. They will also push on the lungs and heart causing discomfort, breathing and eating problems. She might have radial nerve damage in her front leg. This may or may not resolve. You need to find some answers for these questions before you can determine what is best for your dog.

Q&A: Is it time to put my cat down?

Question by Richard G: Is it time to put my cat down?
I’ve got a cat that’s 19 or 20 years old. I adopted her about 4 years ago.

She’s lost all teeth but her canines and one tooth that is rotting (stinks). She can’t completely groom herself, she she does she vomits up a hairball, so I have to comb her with a flea brush.

She has arthritis and cant jump that far in the air (on a dining room chair is the highest it gets) and when she jumps down her butt hits the ground.

Every time she eats I mix her food with water so its like a soup, even then after eating she spends the next 10-20 minutes choking and gagging trying to keep her food down.

She gets nasal infections. I took her to the vet and they gave her antibiotics. That cleared it up for about 2 weeks after treatment then she immediately got another one. So she sneezes all the time. Another vet trip is planned soon for that.

She cant really scratch her claws on the carpet that much any more and it takes her forever to get up or down stairs.

Is she just getting old or is it time to consider putting her down? This is the first old cat I’ve had. I adopted her because someone was just going to get rid of her because she was inconvienent and I wanted to give her a good home until she passed on or was in to much discomfort to live.
Thanks for the answers so far…

As far as life for her goes, all she does all day is sleep. She wakes up about 6:15 am with me when I get ready and just circles and meows for food. Then she goes after eating and sleeps by the heater.

She’ll get up once or twice during the day to move around to a different spot or use the litter, but then goes back to sleep until about 8 or 9 pm for some dinner.
Also… She eats like a horse. If I didnt control her diet she’d be so overweight she couldnt walk.

Question by Tiffany: Canine ‘wrist’ joint treatment past 1.5 years old?
My 18-month old AKC English Lab has serious joint issues. Yes, his parents hold all the health clearances, nevertheless, he has genetic joint issues. Specifically, he has issues with his knees (back legs), hips (hip dysplasia is forming) and arthritic wrists (front legs). There are treatments including but not limited to surgery for the back part of the body. However, I am told that after age 1, there is no surgery to repair his wrists. And ultimately, the wrist issues will lead to a shortened life span.

So, does anyone out there know of an experimental treatment to correct wrist problems in a large breed dog over 1 year old (he will be two in March)?

Our family loves him very much and we do not want to see him in pain. Plus, we want him to have a long and fun life, not a short one with joint pain.

What does my dream mean?

Question by rockstar_gal434: What does my dream mean?
Last night i dreamed that…

My front two teeth are missing.

Then both my sisters are murdered, most of the dream was of me sobbing. I can actually feel the pain.

I concidered commiting suicide, but i know that would hurt my parents too much.

I didn’t turn to religion (i’m an atheist) but it hurt not knowing where they were, if there was an afterlife.

Then one of my sisters sent me a text message and to reply i had to write my message on a $ 1 bill. She couldn’t tell me where she was, she said the clouds and people would know. I tell her i miss her and my other sister so much.

Then my mom comes in my room and i try to cry, but no tears come so i just start shaking uncontrolally.

Then i was on a bus and two older women were making fun of me saying “do you miss them?” in a mocking voice and i say “It wasn’t my dog! they’re my sisters!” and they start laughign so dispite the bus driver yelling at me i turn around and start chocking and hitting them. Then someone else on the bus asks me how they died, i relized i hadn’t cared before because i could only focus on their death.

Then everything clicks, they were posioned by a gang after attending their party and refusing to join their side. So i plan to prove it was murder, so i get invited to their next part and i plan to sneak in before hand to find the posion.

then i wake up.

whats it mean?

Question by forestfeline: Fingerbrushing cat’s teeth, how to reach the back and sides?
I got one of those CET toothpaste+fingerbrush combos about a month ago, and started to try brushing my cat’s teeth. He’s a very well-behaved guy, and for starting this at 13 I think it’s gone rather well. I’ve watched videos and looked elsewhere but they make it seem too easy though. All I’ve accomplished so far is brushing the large canines (or should they be called “felines”? :P ) and the ones right beside them. My kitty has definite yellow side teeth though, and maybe in back but I can’t reach or see very well back there. When I try brushing there he pulls away from the hand holding his lip up and acts like it gagged him or something, and I can’t just pull the lip all the way back either, it’s like it doesn’t stretch enough. Point is, there’s not a lot of room and it’s not supposed to be stressful. He’s a good boy and tries to take it like a man but when he pulls back with his tongue flopping around I feel bad for trying to do it over and over again. He doesn’t bite or scratch, just pulls away. Wrapping him up in a towel doesn’t keep him from jerking his head back. Help please? It cost a lot to get his teeth cleaned professionally a few years ago, and I don’t want him to get gingivitis or periodontal disease if it’ll shorten his lifespan. He seems a lot younger than 13, with arthritis just setting in this past year.
Anything nice would be appreciated, even if it’s just a funny shared experience that failed anyway.
