Should my bf have his dog put to sleep?

Question by iwannabwithu: Should my bf have his dog put to sleep?
My bf’s rottie is 11 and she has had surgery to remove a tumor from her spleen in the last year. Since the surgery she has been for the most part..depressed. She has lately had problems walking due to arthritis in her hips and legs. It has gotten to the point where she cannot even walk outside or hold herself up to go to the bathroom. I have to pick her up when he is not home and bring her outside(im pregnant and she weighs 90lbs.) Then when she comes back in from being outside she cant find a comfortable way to lie back down without crying this terrible cry that makes me feel so awful. Everytime she moves she lets out the same cry. The vet said there is nothing they can do but to put her down. My bf has had her the whole 11 yrs so its hard for him to do that. But i think it is best to let her go, the poor thing is so sad and in so much pain. Any suggestions, at least suggestions on what to do for her pain? Thank you.
I thank all of you for your answers. Since i have posted this question, i have called the vet. He will not do anything for the pain! He said that gangrene is setting in and suggests that my bf decide what to do about putting her down. I again thank you all for your comments. They have helped greatly. :(

Do any of you have tips for socializing an older dog?

Question by xokerrbieox: Do any of you have tips for socializing an older dog?
My dog is about 12 years old and she was brought up with her mom and brother (who are both deceased) at my parent’s house. I now have her at my house because she has bad arthritis, but I can’t get her to get along with any other dog except my dog Nickie. I want to adopt another rescue Lab, but I am afraid it will stress her out because she has never been socialized with any other dogs other than the ones she grew up with. Help!

At the age of 12, she shouldn’t be expected to be trained – only expect to manage her behavior. Especially with the arthritis. If you are looking for a rescue dog – I would wait to get one until she has passed.

Question by meepies: HELP! MY DOG HAS BEEN SICK FOR 1 MONTH. Are there any vets out there that can help?
My dog has had a low grade fever and some lameness in her rear legs for 1 month. She has taken several blood tests and theyhave been normal. Even the lyme disease test came back negative. We decided to treat her for lyme disease anyway to see if this would work. She was treated with two types of antibiotics – amoxycillin for 28 days and doxycyline for 14 days. She has been improving, but she is not 100%. She has difficulty lifting herself off the floor/bed and sitting. Once she’s standing she usually walks OK. However, when we have guests, like we did yesterday, she gets very excited. Therefore, she had a set back and began walking very slowly. Perhaps we over did it with the guests : ( She was also tested for immune mediated arthritis. This test also came back negative. However, the vet is now treating her with steroids. Not sure if this is going to work, but I don’t know what else to do. I should also note that x-rays are normal. Any help out there?

No one can tell if your dog has arthritis unless they are x-rayed.

Your vet can help, and will probably prescribe an analgesic if necessary

My dog shivers all the time?

Question by beautifulvoice: My dog shivers all the time?
My dog shivers alot even when she is in a warm room. She is a lab/alsation cross and is 13 years old which is pretty old. Does anyone know if this is because she really is cold all the time or if its something to do with her muscles and arthritis. We have been to the vet and she has no health problems, shes just an old girl. Does anyones dog do this?

Question by JoMama: Dog was put to sleep over the weekend. I feel guilty?
My 15 year old dog that I got when I was 14 was put to sleep on Saturday. My mom called and said it needed to be done. When I went to their home, she couldn’t use her back legs (had arthritis) has peed, pooped everywhere and couldn’t control it, and had not eaten in 3 days. She seemed very tired. When we put her in the car, she looked at me and gave a big doggy smile. She tried her best to climb into the front seat, but couldn’tmove her rear at all. I feel guilty, like I did the wrong thing. Has anyone else ever felt like this?

Joint supplements?

This may be wrong but I heard that adding sunflower oil to their diet (in not already in the food) can help with joints
