Q&A: How could I help my dog?

Question by Amanda Me: How could I help my dog?
My dog is about 9 years old. He is overweight. He is a mix of a pitbull and black lab. He is in pain all the time just by moving from one place to another. We don’t over feed him. He has had a problem with his back legs, hip area for a long time. My parents say that he has arthritis. My parents haven’t called the vet and they are thinking about putting him down if he doesn’t get better. (and I really don’t ant that.) What would the vet say? (When I ask my parents about call him they say they just might put him down. :[ ) What would be good to give him for the pain? We give him K9 aspirin. Any other information you think I might have forgotten that you think would be a good idea please let me know. Thank you.
We can’t take him for walks. He is to strong and breaks the leash.
I keep telling my parents they need to call the vet but they seem to not want to listen to me. I really really time 345678 don’t want to put him down. He is sad but he still has an apatite. And when we sit with him and pet him he gets happy and wags his tail. I’m going to show my mom what everyone is saying and hopefully she will do something. So thank you. If anyone has anymore info or something let me know. Thank you.

i had to make the decision to put my five and a half year dog down. took her to the vets the week before and they told me she had really dysplacia and arthritis in wich they put her on tablets. soon after she would start screaming and go all rigid so i phoned the vets and they said she would get worse before she got better and then again she had a bad turn when i got no sleep the next night because she was screaming and i was trying to console her the next morning i took her straight to the vet and they said there is nothing wrong with her…..she had another bad turn on the fri and i had the physio come see her on the sat and she got a bit better but then mon this week she couldnt get up wouldnt dink anything and was just not with it. i called the vet yesterday and told them i want them to come out and see her i cant just leave her like that…they came out and said they r sorry they didnt realise how bad she is and she should be put down cos they think she has a brain tumour
how could they have let my poor girl suffer like that by just not listening to me when i kept on telling them something is wrong and then to add to all my pain i dont know what she died of and i feel really bad that no one would help me whil she was suffering i am really torn apart

I am sorry for you. It is so hard when you loose a pet. My dog is 13 and I expect we will have to make the same decision soon. It just breaks my heart. Like loosing a child. Just try to be grateful that she is out of pain now.

Q&A: Can you tell if my dog is dying?

Question by annie g: Can you tell if my dog is dying?
Okay, its gotten worse. She refuses to eat, but she will gladly eat people food. We don’t give her the human food because its bad for her. And last night she was just frantically walking in circles barking for no reason. I had already let her go to the bathroom so i don’t know wat was wrong with her. She has severe arthritis and it is very hard to get up the stairs. She barks at everything and nothing at all. She has severe Alzheimer’s also so it seems like she’s going crazy. She is a 14 year old retired guide dog, and has done many good deeds, so is it time for me to do her a good deed? If you know if that good deed is to put her down, or not. Please help me. If you need to ask questions, i will add on and answer them. Please help me find my answer.
she goes to the bathroom in the house like right after she goes outside. She tells me things with her eyes (yes i sound crazy) shes blind and deaf. But she seems so lost. i dont know wat to do.

Q&A: Very Strange Behavior in a Dog?

Question by Jake: Very Strange Behavior in a Dog?
well, when ever something happens, like a small wound on her leg, something constantly banging, like a gate, wind picking up and stuff like that. she clears off. i seen her today, acting really strange. after she cleared off, she would not stay still. constantly moving back a forwards, up and down. does anyone know what going on??

i think she is a naturally strange dog, as shes inbred. her uncles her grandfather or something like that. so she already has a few issues like arthritis and she has absolutely no hair on her ears

any help appreciated
i forgot to add, that shes going on 6 this year

What do you mean by “clears off?” it sounds like she is a nervous dog. Take her to the vet and see if she can be helped with medication.Obedience classes may also help her gain confidence, and make sure she gets enough exercise,as a tired dog is a calm dog.

How can I get my dog to lay on her blanket?

Question by danie_angel85: How can I get my dog to lay on her blanket?
Our family dog Callie is 12 years old. Ever since she was a puppy, we would bring her in the garage at night. Callie now has arthritis, so laying on the concrete, even with her blankets, makes it hard for her to get up in the cold mornings. We bought her a heated bed and put it under her favorite blanket, but she refuses to lay on it. Instead, she lays on the other blanket. We tried taking that one out, but she only moves to the door mat. We took away the door mat, but then she just lays on the ground. How in the world do we get her to lay on it? The only use it gets is from our three cats. I really wish that she would lay on it because it would help her and keep her warm. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

If she is that bad and it is that cold, bring the poor thing in the house with you.

Any tips for taking care of an older dog?

Question by lubablelissy: Any tips for taking care of an older dog?
My boyfriend and I purchased a female pomeranian from a lady off craigslist. She thought the dog was about two or three, but after taking her to the vet we found she was more around the age of ten. Knowing this we still don’t regret buying her. She is the best dog I could ever ask for and I wouldn’t trade her for the world. We’ve recently found out she has a mild heart murmur, arthritis in her back legs, and some throat problems. She still loves to run around and take long walks though.

I’d like to keep her around for as long as possible and will do anything in order to help her.

Any tips or suggestions would be great!

Answer by rjn529
As long as she is active and happy taking walks, do so. Give her as much exercise as she is comfortable with. Some dogs, like my poodle, was born with a heart murmur and lived to be 21.

Keep her warm to keep the arthritis under control. If she appears to be in pain, the vet may recommend something to help through that.

Q&A: What do you think is wrong with my dog?

Question by abmayfie: What do you think is wrong with my dog?
My dog was hit by an SUV about 3 months ago. He ran out of my backyard and was hit by the front and rear tires of a car speeding down my street. We rushed him to the emergency vet thinking the worst and about an hour (and $ 600) later, he came out of the back of the vet with only a cut on his back leg.

About a month after that, he got up from a nap and I noticed that he was holding his head down and walking weird. I went to pick him up and he was very stiff and whining. Rather than take him to the emergency vet, I decided to wait until the next day so it wouldn’t be so expensive. He was lying on his bed and sleeping and only whining when he had to walk, so I crated him for the night. The next morning when I got up to take him, it was like nothing was ever wrong with him. He was running all over the house like a crazy dog (normal activity :) ). I assumed he was stung by a bee because we had an issue with some in our back yard the day before.

About 2 weeks ago, he did the same thing. It’s weird because his body kind of tenses so that it’s curved and he holds his head to the left. He’s fine as long as he is lying down and not moving, but if you try to move him he starts to whine. Again, after sleeping in his crate overnight and limiting his activity he was fine the next day. This time I can’t blame it on a bee because we took care of the bee problem outside. If it happens again, I have every intention of bringing him to the vet, but I’m just wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what it could be. Maybe doggie arthritis because of the run-in with the SUV? He’s not sick any other way – eating and drinking perfectly fine and still running around like nothing is wrong.
Like I said, I have every intention of taking him to the vet if it happens again – taking him while there’s nothing wrong with him will do no good -he’s not in any pain right now at all. I have no problem spending the money on him and am just curious to see if anyone else has an idea of what it could be.

Q&A: How to make things easier for my dog?

Question by Troy: How to make things easier for my dog?
A few days ago I posted a question about what to do with my dog Ajax. He’s the world to me, we’re always together and up until now I thought nothing would separate me from him. But we’re running out of money very quickly and one of the first things that had to go were his meds for arthritis and vet visits. A friend of my brother offered me to adopt him so he could get better and I decided to accept. He’s getting worse and I know he’s in pain.

What can I do so he will miss me less once he’s with his new owner? he’s such an easy going and sweet dog that I don’t think he’ll act up but I don’t want him to be confused or out of place for long. He has some toys but he’s not too attached to any of them and he sleeps with me so he doesn’t have a bed. Is there anything I should send with him? what are the things I need to tell the new owner about Ajax? How long will it take him to get used to his new place?
Red Pony, I’m 14 years old and have medical problems of my own, there’s not a lot I can do in terms of finances. We already sold the computer we had, this is a borrowed laptop which we need because we’re selling our souls on ebay. The car, jewlry and most of the living room is gone. I don’t own anything of enough value to buy my dog’ meds. If I did I would not think twice about selling it.

It’s a responsible thing you’re doing for your dog. Kudos to you for doing the right thing. He will adjust fairly quickly. Within a week or two, dogs usually warm up and are content in their new household. He will just need time and patience to adjust. Tell his new owner about his personality. What he likes and what he doesn’t. The routine that he is generally used to, the food he likes, what commands he knows, etc. This can help create a bond between Ajax and his new owner.

You don’t really need to send anything with him if he’s not particularly attached to anything in your home. He will miss you, but he will also adjust and come to love the place he will reside. He just needs a lot of interaction with them, make certain they know about Ajax’ personality and quirks if there are any, and they should get along fine.

My parents are reluctant to put our dog down?

Question by Mandy: My parents are reluctant to put our dog down?
My question is should I encourage them to go through with it? They have been considering the idea for a while and I think it is well past my dog’s time. He’s only 14, but he has lost the luster in his eyes. He sleeps the majority of the day and has sores all over from lying down so much. He has Cushing’s disease (which causes weakening of abdomen and leg muscles and excessive thirst and urination), arthritis, and recurrent infection. He has poor appetite, never wags his tail and has great difficulty getting up and moving around. I pity him. But my parents don’t want to let go. I love our dog, but he seems to be miserable.

would a bath be too stressful for an old dog?

Question by setsunaluvr: would a bath be too stressful for an old dog?
i have a 16-year-old border collie. she’s an indoor dog, but it’s been a good long while since her last bath and she’s beginning to smell distinctly doggy. she doesn’t move much (arthritis) and has trouble climbing stairs and can’t get in the car. we don’t bathe her at home because hose water is too cold. the place we take her to is a self-wash place, but she has to climb a ramp and stand in a tub and be surrounded by other dogs who make lots of noise and stuff and the dryer there is really loud as well.

so basically, is that too much stress on my dog? should we just not breathe when we’re close to her or should we try to give her a bath?
a waterless bath prob won’t work. she’s got a lot of fur.

and how would i fill the outdoor tub with warm water?
….i have my own bath tub, but my parents won’t let her use it because
A. it will leave a ton of dog hair in the drain, and
B. her claws will scratch it.
she’s been to this place before, but she knows she’s getting a bath there which upsets her. and then there are other less than pleased dogs there who bark the whole time. plus her eyesight’s been going bad, so she’ll be hearing a bunch of noise she can’t see. so it’s not a matter of introducing her to it, just wondering if it’s too much for her senses.

You should try giving her a waterless bath or using doggy wipes.
