Not sure if my dog is just over heated or sick?

Question by Elder: Not sure if my dog is just over heated or sick?
I’m not sure if he’s just overheated or if something else is wrong. All he’s doing is panting really heavily and crying. It’s about 73 degrees outside and we have fans going in the house so it’s not uncomfortable for my grandmother and I, but for my dog I’m not sure. He is 11 years old and I let him out a couple of times but I didn’t watch him to see if he went to the bathroom. He just started doing this about 20 mins ago. He’s walking fine and he’s laying down right now. His breathing has lightened up some since he lied down a couple of mins ago. He does have arthritis so I’m not sure if he could be having a flare up.

Any idea why he is acting this way?
I’m going to call the vet if he’s still acting this way in an hour. I just let him out and he went to the bathroom just fine and he’s kinda jogging around the fence and barking like he normally does. But he keeps digging a hole in this one spot along the fence and he keeps laying down in it. That’s what’s leading me to believe he’s just hot.
Oh, and he’s also eating and drinking fine
Well, I just had a little bit of a tough time getting him in the house. He kept digging holes all over the backyard and he dug one about 2 feet deep. He went to lay down in the back bedroom where we keep his bed/pillow. and I have a box fan blowing on him. His gums are still the normal color. He stopped crying now but he is still breathing kinda heavy. and if I forgot to mention he is a little over weight about 100 lbs when we took him to the vet about a month ago. He’s a black lab mix.
Well, my mom just got off of work so she’s going to take a look at the dog when she gets home. She think he may have been stung by a bee or something outside. He’s calmed down quite a lot since I brought him in, so I think he’ll be fine, but if this breathing keeps on after my mom gets home, I’m going to call the vet. Thanks for the help guys. If any thing major comes up I’ll keep you all in the loop

People cannot diagnose your dog on Y!A, even if they were vets. Call your vet. This is an old dog. #

Question by Kay: Besides, teeth- are there other ways to know your dog’s age?
so judging by his teeth- I think our new dog about 10 months-1 year old.
but he doesn’t act his age at all- I am thinking he is older, like about 3-4, maybe older. (he is very calm and obedient, never chews and almost ignores most of the toys we got him)
If his previous owners cleaned his teeth regularly, could that make them appear to be younger?

He was found on the streets and no one claimed him so we have no idea what his history is…
He is also not neutered but is very well potty trained, we haven’t had any trouble with him marking the house.

We will be taking him to the vet very soon, as he is also limps occasionally (maybe it’s arthritis?) and to get him fixed. but I just wanted some advice in the mean time.

Thanks!
*** It doesn’t matter to me if he is an older dog- He is still the perfect dog for us… I just want to know how old he is.

What is the best way to get over the death of a dog?

Question by americanlivvy: What is the best way to get over the death of a dog?
He was my neighbor behind me’s dog. There were two of them. Spot and pepper. (Spot is the one that passed away.)

Spot didn’t deserve to die. He was found by his owners, on a farm in the snow and almost died, but they saved him. He didn’t have a tail, he had a little nub instead and when you came to see him he would shake it and it was like a tiny bunny’s tail. He was very talented. He LOVED it when you threw his ball for him and he would come and bring it back for you. He was able to jump up in mid air and catch the ball. He was smart. When you came to the fence to get his ball from him he would drop it and if it was too far all you’d have too say was “bring it closer spot” and he would bring it so that you could reach it. He was such a sweet dog. I used to take care of them alot when my neighbors left to go on a trip. I would open the garage and the first thing i’d hear was spot running up to the fence hearing the jingling of his collar jumping all over it excited to see me. He would jump on my lap and lick my face. He was so playful, sweet, and smart and i loved that dog so much even though he wasn’t mine. They didn’t get alot of TLC from their owners, they weren’t deprived but they didn’t get enough attention from them and so now i’m afraid for pepper now that her best friend is gone. The thing is, Spot wasn’t very old he was mid aged, was healthy, and was much younger then peppe. who (pepper is old and is deaf now and has arthritis). I was suppossed to take care of both of them this weekend. My neighbor called my mom and told her and when i came home from school my mom explained to me that spot had gone out to lay in the sun and didn’t get up when my neighbor’s husband came to feed him. I went to see pepper yesterday and today and it made me get a big lump in my throat. It was so quiet. I didn’t hear the jingling of the collar, the usual sweet excitied greeting from spot. Something was missing. Poor pepper. She’s so lonely now. She and I both are looking for Spot very hard, but only I know that he isn’t going to come and appear. I cried myself to sleep thinking about it yesterday and as i write this… tears are filling my eyes. His death was so unexpected. My mom and i think he maybe got a heart attack. This is such a big change for me. When my dog barks, i no longer hear the bark of spot to join next to the fence. How do i get over this and stop crying so much?

Need help deciding if it is time for my dog?

Question by Rachelle: Need help deciding if it is time for my dog?
I need help deciding whether or not to put my 9 year old lab mix to sleep, because my family and I can’t agree on a situation, and would like some opinions. He’s a great dog, and a beloved family member. He has his up’s and downs, but lately things seem to be getting worse. First he has a lot of arthritis in his hips, and has trouble walking most days, and other day’s he’s walking around like nothing’s wrong, and on the days he is in pain and limping, he doesn’t walk too far, have to bring food, water to him. He acts perky when he sees a dog walk by, or he knows he’s going for a ride in the car. But other than that, he acts more depressed, and he doesn’t like going outside much to do his job, because he doesn’t like to walk too far or be outside very long, likes to sleep more than usual. He moans, because he’s in pain, give him aspirin, but that’s only temporary comfort. He acts senile more and more, forgets what were doing, or acts like he can’t hear me when I take him somewhere. He runs away from me when we’re on a walk, when he’s having a good day, like someone once said, maybe he’s running and trying to find that place to die? I would love to wait until he can’t walk anymore, but he’s around 90pds, and a pretty stubborn and testy dog, I couldn’t pick him up and carry him in the vet. Any, helpful opinions would be appreciated, that I could discuss with my family. I just don’t want to let him go because I see him having another bad day, but don’t want him to suffer either or be selfish.
Thank you.

Oh, I feel for you! Being a dog owner is like having kids – they’re such a part of the family, and it’s so tough when the time does come… Also, not being about to talk to them seems to make it even worse, because you have no idea what they are feeling or thinking. I would suggest talking with your vet and getting his/her suggestion as well. Sit down with your family (I would include any kids if they are old enough, as the dog is their family as well) and decide if it’s for the best of the dog. If he/she is living a poor quality life right now, it may very well be in his best interest, but again, it’s something that the dog needs to tell you and your family. He’s lived a wonderful life, and only the ones close to him know best. Sending my very best to you and your dog!

what can i do to help dying dog?

Question by Jill C: what can i do to help dying dog?
My boyfriends dog has been very ill for aboout a year and a half now. It started off with constant ear infections, which became a hacking cough, which for the last year hasn’t gone 5 minutes without coughing. Then seizures started shortly after the coughing. The thing is even though he was sick everyone thought he would get better- although they should’ve taken him to the vet and theres no excuse for that. he was still enjoying eating, playing and was happy. Then a few months ago his arthritis took a turn for the worst and he struggled to walk, not to mention the smell of infection coming from within- it smells liek rotting animal. For the past two weeks he has stopped eating and drinking and walking- he lays in the same spot until someone moves him- he lost bladder and bowel movement control – he continues to seizure and is in a lot of pain suffering-to put him down is impossible for them tho-but this dog is in unconcievable pain- any vets- or centers in bergen county nj u reccom.?
by the way there is no convincing his mom to take the dog to the vet- i guess shes against it- but we’ve suggested it for months- my boyfriend even offered to take it ourselfs. I would report to the ASPC, but they take good care of there other animals- so i wouldn’t want to put them in danger- I just don’t understand why this dog hasn’t passed yet- also, the mom isn’t uncaring – she seems to really care but she can’t put him to sleep she feels to guilty.

Sorry they need to be reported for animal neglect. The dog obviously needs to be taken from them and to a vets.

whats wrong with my dog, is she depressed?

Question by BabyCakes: whats wrong with my dog, is she depressed?
okay so i have a maltese, shes nine years olds. lately i’ve noticed shes been acting really wierd. all she does is mope around all day. sometimes when i pick her up she’ll yelp reallly loud as if shes in pain. or if im holding her she’ll start growling.(growling for her is normal though she always does that) but then the growl will end in a really loud yelp. im concerned cuz shes usuallly not like this. and a lot of the time during the day or at night she’ll just sit there staring off into space crying. she doesnt really have that many health problems. she does have arthritis in one of her back legs. (i dont remember wich one) but she isnt limping or anything. she does tend to shake her butt a lot when shes walking tho. (it sounds silly but she does). can some please tell me whats wrong with my dog? also, sometimes when we pick her up she also yelps loudly.
help.
thanks!
my mom tried giving her like a massage to try to see from where her pain is coming from but my dog didnt yelp or anything. and shes not on any medication for her arthritis, when the vet told us she had it he said it wasnt that advance enough to put her on medication at the moment. but that in a couple years she might start limping and that then she might need some. that was a couple years a go. but shes not limping. oh! and for somereason she wont jump onto my bed anymore she just looks at me whith sad eyes like she cant.

Answer by Jojo Bean
You need to take her to the vet immediately. Her yelps and constant crying are a sign that she’s in main, probably sprouting from her midsection area.
Dogs tend to hide pain as much as they can, so when they start crying out in pain, something is really, really hurting them.

Input on putting my dog down?

Question by Nicole: Input on putting my dog down?
Our family dog, Scooter, was struck with vestibular disease last year. He’s 14 years old and is on his last limb. He has a bad leg which makes his walking even more unstable. He somewhat drags it from time to time. He has accidents constantly and he can’t be left home alone for more than around three hours because of it. He still eats and has a love for food, but yet a majority of the time he just looks depressed. Maybe it’s because we can’t give him constant attention anymore since we don’t have time. His sister is extremely healthy compared to him and we expect her to last at least a couple more years. But the rest of the family is talking about putting him down. I can tell there’s still some happiness left in him…but..I’m just not sure about anything. With the accidents, falling down, bad leg (which he chews constantly making it bleed), arthritis, and everything else…maybe putting him down is the best thing to do. I’m 50/50 on it. I love him to death and I can’t imagine ending his life unnaturally…but then again, he’s taking a toll on our family and I have no idea how happy he is or how much pain he is in…
He doesn’t have a bladder infection. The accidents come with having vestibular disease.
I should have also mentioned Scooter is deaf. He can hear loud claps and snaps, but that’s about it.

Put a bandage around his leg so he will not chew at it. And if he still continues give him an anti flea coat of shampoo or something. Do not put your dog down.

Getting rid of my dog?

Question by Dude24: Getting rid of my dog?
Okay, so for my graduation present my grandma got me a puppy (Chloe) that I really wanted. During the summer everything was fine. However, I still live at home but I’m a full time college student, plus I have a part time job. I am gone from home a lot. My mom was recently diagnoised with rhumatoid arthritis and cannot take care of Chloe by herself. My dad’s work is doing very poorly so I have full finacial responsibility for Chloe, on top of the other things I have to pay for myself and I frequently find myself short of money and I don’t want to neglect Chloe’s needs. With my dad’s work, he is gone frequently because he was offered a job about 2 hours away, so he is only home 3 to 4 days a week, the days he isn’t home Chloe doesn’t get much attention. My brother is still in high school so my mom is generally the only one home during the day and she cannot take care of a puppy’s needs properly due to her disability.

I try to walk Chloe every day but with it being winter sometimes the weather gets bad out and I only have time during the night to walk her. I cannot when it get bad out at night.

I have worked on potty training her, but I cannot keep her in a crate all day long, that is just very unfair and so I bought her a kennel so she has more room and can be outside sometimes during the day when my mom is the only one home. However it is very hard to keep it clean, which I find I run out of time to keep up on. I have fallen behind on her training as well.

I feel absolutely horrible. It worked out very well during the summer when I was home all day, and it was nice out. However after my mom was diagnoised not too long ago, and I started college and had to get a job, I just don’t know how I can keep up and I think it’s very unfair to Chloe.

Am I making the irresponsible decision to get rid of her, like I’m just giving up? Because I hate when people get animals and get rid of them just because they don’t want to take care of them anymore. I will not take her to a shelter nor will I just give her away to anyone. I will only after I find a home for her that will be able to take care of her and I can trust them to treat her correctly.

I have already missed getting her updated on one of her shots.

Please don’t tell me I am a bad dog owner, because I try really hard but some things have come up and I want to do the right thing? Is giving her to someone else the right thing to do?

Can I give my dog Aspirin?

Question by Jessica: Can I give my dog Aspirin?
My dog is a beagle/hound mix,11 years old(a bit overweight)and has a slipped disk in her back and sever arthritis. We took her to the vet and she prescribed her Rimadyl, but her prescription ran out a few days ago(and no refills). she’s in extreme pain. she yelps and screams when she moves and she won’t eat because she cant bend her neck or walk anywhere.

We have Tylenol,Motrin,Ibuprofen, and Aspirin. The vets office is closed so we can’t call her and ask.

what is safe to give her for now?

And no, we will NOT put her to sleep because of this. We’re trying to find other ways to get rid of this problem,so don’t say “your so inhumane, but her to sleep, blah blah blah”.

thank you :)
mhmm,im a lowlife for letting my animal live?
she is a very happy animal, shes just in pain.

so, are doctors “low lives” for trying to keep humans alive that are in sever pain and agony,or internally drowning, or having seizures every other day,or begging family and friends to kill them because of their pain?

its their professional job to keep them alive,so its my personal job to let my dog live and keep her as comfortable as possible.

please only post educated,helpful answers.

we had been giving her Aspirin before,so we’ll probably give it to her again.

I’m severely disappointed in everyone’s childish answers. think before you type, and read my entire post.

Did the vet say you can?

Its a shame that you are allowing your dog to suffer, and live in extreme agony..You are truly a lowlife.

The dog will always suffer even when you try to cover it up with medication. That is a shame that you allow her to live in this torment, you are a truthfully mindless soul ..
