Has anyone gotten surgery done for their dogs hip dysplasia?

I just found out recently that my 1 year old hound/beagle mix has pretty severe hip dysplasia in both hips and he is developing arthritis already. He has a consultation with a surgeon comeing up, but I was wondering if anyone can give their personal experiences after the surgery? Like what to expect, best types of physical therapy etc. He is not a big dog, he is only 43 pounds and he is full grown. He is very active so he does not have any weight problems.

I had a rott who had hd so bad at 5 months he could not bend his back legs. We had what is called TPO’s done on both hips, They saw the pelvis in half and replate the femure bone correctly and plate and pin everything together. This is 2 seperate surgeries. and 6 months of recovery. 4 months of quiet crate time At a year I’m they will do a different kind of surgery. Get all your details on recovery time, a large crate with soft padding or comforter, a wire crate is best sohe can see you at all time. but be assured he is not alond and quiet time means better healing. Depending on what they do. is what will take shorter or longer healing time. Dogs come around very quickly and adjust, But its up to you to keep him under retraint. take him out for potty breaks (on lead or a flexi) and contain his mobility until the surgeon is assured all stitches are set. then its time to learn to walk and gain back muscles to help the hips and legs themselves. We started with very short walks I mean 10 – 20 yards and each day walked a little further. It was a long loving plan. & so well worth it. my guy passed at almost 12 years of age. he waked, ran and played, his whole life. It pays to do the best you can and take the time. Therapy to them is love and patience. as well as your guidance in when and when not to be loose. best regards.
None of my dogs have ever had surgery for hip dysplasia but I know a lot of people’s dogs who have.
They recovered remarkably well but had to do a lot of lead walking after they were fully recovered from the operation and I understand that hydrotherapy is used to help the dog to regain full mobility.
Your Vet will probably prescribe pain killers for hm for a few weeks.

Sounds like a good candidate for the surgery and you should expect a great result. When he gets home from the vet, he will need to be walked with a little help at first but not for long and he will mend quite fast. back to normal very soon. you will be surprised how much better he will feel so quickly.

my old english sheep dog had the surgery and was helped alot by it
i had my mini dachshund done this last christmas and she is doing just great…had her done at uc davis vet medicine school for vet…

I have a sister who had a Lab whos hips were done and I am sorry to say the result was poor. His quality of life was just very low. The good news is that this was 15 years ago and I am sure advancements have been made.
Look into it and see if the place doing the surgery has a client who would let you talk with them. Most pet owners would be willing to let you see how there dog did after the surgery but the vets office would have to place a call or two, and any good vet will be happy to do it. They should also be able to tell you of some of the recent improvements and the “Expected” recovery.
