hip dysplasia better with age?
i took my choc lab puppy to the vet about 6 months ago, and had her checked for hip dysplasia. the vert confirmed she had a form of it, but she was too young to operate on, and that it might be able to clear itself up with age. the vet put her on cosequin and metacam, and she takes both daily. she is now 11 months old, and although she is still not 100% like a normal dog should be, she is without a doubt getting better each month, and looks 10 times better then she did in the begining. the vet said they would look at her again after she was one year old, claiming it might work itself out and she may put grow it.
has anyone heard this before, and is she feeling better because she is out growing it, or are the medications drugging her into feeling better but in reality she isnt any better?
what should i look forward too if this is something on going as it is now, to where she feels better but isnt 100% but still plays jumps and runs.. but not as well as a normal puppy would.
jared and SADIE!!
got her from a pet shop.
my own dumb fault, ill never do that again. the vet did take xrays. and may vets said it can get more manageable as the puppy gets older and grows into its body. i spoke to my vet today. they said they would check on her again in may.

One of our dogs has it, which was very alarming considering we bred our Older Rotty with a Rotty owned by a vet and little did she know her own dog had hip dysplaysia which went totally unnoticed until we informed her that our dog had it, she checked and rechecked her dog so many times and was willing to give us every cent to ensure he would get right treatment. But we werent worried we seen our own vet and she gave us some medications and he runs around like a charm, doesnt have the slightest hint of any problems but if you look hard enough you can tell his shoulders are broader than usual due to him using all his front to lift the weight off his backlegs when he goes to sit. We are seeing improvements as days go on.. so i guess in some cases it does get better but i think when the dogs get older older it starts to really become a factor as bones get older, joints wear out etc. So we just take it day by day, he runs around and plays like a maniac which is great and sits properly instead of right on his butt and sticking his legs out the side of him (but uses all his front weight to ease himself into that position sometimes). We are also very cautious of how much running and jumping around he does, just to ensure he doesnt hurt himself. Like when playing tugawar we make sure when we let go it isnt sudden so he falls back on his backlegs suddenly. But his great! Hopefully it doesnt become really bad like some cases
You really should have taken the dog back to the breeders for a refund or another puppy, that’s what most contracts call for. Dogs do NOT outgrow hip dysplasia, and surgery is about $2000.00-$3000.00 per side. If you don’t want to take the pup back, the breeder should pay for 1/2 of the surgeries. What were the OFA ratings on the parents, you failed to mention that.
How did the vet diagnose hip dysplasia? Unless it was with x-rays then there can’t be a proper diagnosis. Also it is unusual for HD to show up in puppies unless it is severe.
Dogs do not outgrow HD and it doesn’t get better with age…once dysplasia always dysplasia.
If you bought your puppy from a responsible breeder that has OFA/PennHip on the parents they should be notified.Puppies from a responsible breeder are guaranteed against genetic issues of which HD is one.
