Q&A: Very Strange Behavior in a Dog?
Question by Jake: Very Strange Behavior in a Dog?
well, when ever something happens, like a small wound on her leg, something constantly banging, like a gate, wind picking up and stuff like that. she clears off. i seen her today, acting really strange. after she cleared off, she would not stay still. constantly moving back a forwards, up and down. does anyone know what going on??
i think she is a naturally strange dog, as shes inbred. her uncles her grandfather or something like that. so she already has a few issues like arthritis and she has absolutely no hair on her ears
any help appreciated
i forgot to add, that shes going on 6 this year

What do you mean by “clears off?” it sounds like she is a nervous dog. Take her to the vet and see if she can be helped with medication.Obedience classes may also help her gain confidence, and make sure she gets enough exercise,as a tired dog is a calm dog.

this is very sad it could be her age but she could be getting anxiety
sounds like she has a few anxiety problems.
i would suggest setting her up a crate ( but leave the door open) in a dim lit quite room cover the crate with a sheet or something and when she starts stressing just gently place her in that room until the anxiety has worn off.
the more fuss u make of her while she is stressing will only reinforce her behaviour is good.
she needs to learn that if she goes to her den and sits it out no harm will come to her, and that running off is not an option.
also do not make a fuss of her when u let her out again, just act normal and calm.
u can also look into some herbal meds for anxiety problems.
good luck
Seems a visit to the vet may be needed. Does she get plenty of walks? Perhaps she is bored.
Is she getting plenty of attention?
Don’t put her behaviour down to ‘being inbred’, much as if the common relatives were timid, of course doubling up on this trait will come through in the puppies. Arthritis could set in if there’s a construction fault which ran through the bloodlines of her relatives too. However, again, this is by NO means down to inbreeding! It sounds like she was line-bred in any case, inbreeding being the closest form of line-breeding, ie mother to son, father to daughter, siblings and half-siblings. Although most breeders will line-breed because it’s the most reliable way of breeding to type, inbreeding as above, is rarely done these days. Outcross breeding can be just as disastrous as inbreeding because putting two lines together that haven’t been tried before, is an unknown. It can produce good, but it can also produce rubbish.
As for what’s going on with her right now, get her in for a routine health check and take it from there, depending on what, if anything, is found.
I agree with most of the answers and believe it is anxiety. But I don’t think it is due to her age, 6 is not that bad. My dog started his symptoms of anxiety when he was 8. Also inbreeding in dogs is not as a big of a deal as it is in humans. The source of her anxiety though, may be her surroundings. She seems unsure and not comfortable. The vet can proscribe anxiety medicine for your dog if he sees fit as well.
Sounds to me like the banging gate is making her nervous, so fixed the gate already. Since this is not normal behavior for your dog might not hurt to have your vet look at her. The constantly moving to me sounds like she is uneasy for some reason. Since I am not a vet I would ask mine if the meds. can be causing this, I wouldn’t think so but again not a vet and thankfully not experienced with reactions to meds with my dogs.
