First of all, do not give your dog ANY type of medicine without consulting a vet.
These types of medications are developed for humans, and tested on humans. They will not have the same effect on animals as they will on us. Their bodies metabolize medications different.
You could end up killing your dog!

Anyone have a really old dog? Mine is 16!?

Question by Cosmogirl: Anyone have a really old dog? Mine is 16!?
Just wondering if anyone else has an old dog My dog is a miniature schnauzer she is 16 years old and still doing wonderful! She has no problems walking jumping playing or anything and is very happy and doesn’t act like she is in pain what so ever I have had her since I was 3 and I’m 19! She does have some bladder problems where she potties randomly I know that it is kind of disgusting but I cant possibly put her down because she is in such good shape other than the bladder problems She just sleeps in her bed and we wash it and her weekly (since she only does it when she is sleeping) I also have another dog we aren’t sure of her breed but she is 13 yrs old and not doing as good she just has a hard time getting up and down because she is very overweight and so its hard for her to get up and down along with old im going to take her to the vet and see if she has arthritis and get her some meds and that might help her get up and down better but she is a medium sized dog I love my dogs!

Question by What.. EVER: Please Read: Something is wrong with my dog’s leg! Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?
First, yes, I already to him to the vet about this 2 weeks ago! And I just called an ER and the Vet called me back and said to watch him and wait til morning, then bring him in. So no “Vet” answers please!
I’m just wanting ideas of what to ask the Vet to look for if anyone has had a similar experience.

Please please read and answer?

About 2 weeks ago, when my 3 year old Bichon Frise would wake up from naps, he would kinda hop and I thought his right front paw was hurt or something, but then he would play like normal afterward. My neighbor had a Bichon before and she told me that her Bichon would pretend he was hurt to get attention, so we just chalked it up to that. But I was still worried, so I took my dog in to a vet and the vet said everything was good and A-ok.

So anyway, today (Saturday) I took my dog to the dog park so he could run free in the fenced in area. He loves that. He played and played and ran really really fast and we played fetch a long time. There was no sign at all of anything wrong with him. After 3 hours of being at the park, we went in my car. In the car he fell asleep and when we got home, he would lift his paw so I thought it was bugging him again. So I carried him to our door and then put him down.

He started limping again and barely putting weight on his front right paw. That’s when I called the ER Vet because I knew something was wrong. The ER Vet told me to keep him comfortable that it is probably a pulled muscle and to bring him in the morning. I am bringing him in this morning (Sunday) I just can’t sleep because I am so worried.

He falls asleep and then wakes up and as soon as he moves his leg, he yelps. Then when he walks, he will not put his front right paw down at all.

Does anyone know what I should make sure I ask the Vet to do or look at? I doubt it is broken because he was running on it for a long time, and I watched him like a hawk at the dog park, like I always do. He did not rough-house with the dogs, he just ran and played fetch with me more than anything else. I doubt it’s arthritis because he’s only 3 years old. But now for him to yelp and not put it down at all… I know something is going on but am not sure what. :( He does move it. But ????

Please… any ideas?
Here is my previous question about this. I thought it was his back leg but now that he is actually not wanting to use his leg, it is his front right paw. However, when I brought him in for the exam, the Vet checked all his legs. :(

Thanks “Bozema” but of course I realize no one on here can say what is wrong for sure but I am asking for people who have experienced the same thing and what they were told it was and how it turned out and also I want to make sure the Vet is more thorough this time, since they didn’t take it seriously last time.
“Cane Corso Mom”… thanks for the link to that site, I’ve been there before a long time ago. But about the luxating patellas, that only happens in the hind legs, not the front legs. So this is some other problem as it involves his right front leg. But thanks anyway. :)
Bob… the Vet did not take x-rays because his leg seemed fine at the Vet’s office and he was acting normal on it most of the time, just when he’d wake up he walked funny. They thought he just slept on it wrong. Ugh. :(

I think the ER vet gave you the best guess. Since we aren’t vets and no one can examine the dog, it’s hard to say. Since there was no traumatic injury, it’s not likely a break. Possibly a pulled muscle, strained or torn tendon or other soft tissue injury. But only a vet can tell after an exam.

Question by JANET B: Does anyone know the likely cost of x-rays and an operation for a dog with a torn cruciate ligament? ?
We’re not sure whether he has this or arthritis.

Best answer:

Answer by RegalThai
The price of this can vary widely from vet to vet. A vet should be able to tell the difference between a torn ligament and arthritis without an xray. Xrays do not image soft tissue like ligaments. Have you been to a vet for evaluation?

Question by attagirl: My dog seems stiff when she walks, does anyone have any tips?
She also seems to have a little trouble going from standing to lying down. It’s quite cold where we live, so this may be a factor. She still can run up and down the stairs, and jump on furniture. The vet thought she may be developing arthritis, (she’s 10) Does anyone use any natural, not harmful vitamins they can recommend?

I am just looking for ideas to ask my vet…

Question by jonikins2000: Does anyone know of any home remdies for dogs with arthritis?
I was just wandering if there were any inexpensive or home remedies for dogs with arthritis. I just started taking care of my brothers dog/baby, he’s had her for 17 year. She’s a boxer/lab mix and one of the best pets a person could ask for. I guess due to her age she has trouble getting up and down, I just hate to see her have such trouble, and I’m sure sleeping on the floor isn’t helping them old bones. I do have a doggie bed & blankets for her. I just want to try to help her until her daddy, can get back here to get her. Any suggestions?

Question by animalover: Has anyone out there ever owned a dog called a Xolo? I have been researching this breed & want to know more!?
I have read that they are hairless & even used therapeutically for arthritis patients. I love dogs & have owned mixed breeds, chihuahuas, and a golden retriever.

Best answer:

Answer by joanplus4dogs
Definitely do your research. They are more of a primitive dog & not like most dogs – goldens. They actually are only mostly hairless & has hair on their head, feet & tail. Their skin is very thick & had a higher body temperature than most dogs due to being hairless. Vets kinda had to get a running start to give them them yearly vaccinations for the needle to go thru the skin. A breed that requires a knowledgeable owner.
