Very well could be, but only a vet can tell. It could be something more serious. Dogs have a huge pain tolerance so by the time we are able to tell they are hurting, it means they have been hurting long before this. Age, breed, history all play a part on whether or not it could be arthritis. The good news. If it is, there are many, many options as far as supplement are concerned and work great. Everything from OTC supplements, different food, prescription meds, exercise, etc.

Question by Rebecca S: Is it safe to give an 80lb lab baby aspirin for arthritis?
My 7 or 8 year old dog, Scarlett, is an 80lb black lab and for the past few weeks she has been crying when I take her out of her crate in the morning. She limps a little and seems a little stiff. I think she has arthritis. I haven’t called the vet yet but this morning she was crying and I felt so bad I decided to give her some baby aspirin. She was crying again tonight so I have her another one. I’m worried it may be bad for her; human medicine doesn’t always react to animals the same way.
Getting her a special animal medicine is out of my budget right now. If baby aspirin isn’t good for her, what else could I give her?

Of course I’m going to contact the vet, but I have class every morning and work every afternoon until evening. I love my big baby girl. I just don’t want her to hurt until I can get her there.

How big is her crate? If its only when she comes out she may be stiff from laying in it.

Otherwise, you shouldn’t give an animal any human medication without the ok and instructions from a vet, because we don’t know how their bodies will react to something not made for them.

I’d try and get her to the vet, and if you don’t have all the money ask about a payment plan, some vets will do it, some wont. Our old vet did it but when we moved it took us a long time to find a new one that did.
Otherwise there may be a vet that wont charge unless treatment is given, one time we had no money at all but we had to take our dog to the vet, and we found one that will examine the animal for free, they will tell you if it needs treatment and how much it will cost, but whether to go for the treatment is up to you, if you don’t you don’t have to pay, in that case our dog had Kennel cough and the vet said we could give him Robutussin and wrote out how much to give him, which worked, and didn’t cost us anything.
So sometimes human medications can help animals, but I’d never give them any without a vet saying to.

Rheumatoid arthritis is not contagious from humans to dogs, or from one human to another for that matter. It is an auto-immune disease. There is no bacteria or virus causing it, therefore it cannot be transmitted.

I have a similar situation, an old dog and a young playful pup. The older dog plays and roughhouses with the pup all the time now whereas before he would just lay around. He is not going to hurt himself. If he gets tired or starts to ache, he will simply lay down. I think the exercise and companionship is good for him and I also let him have an aspirin every other day which does wonders for him. My guy is a small dog, so your chow could easily handle one aspirin a day.

Question by ckrunhard: Vet Says 12-13 y.o. German Shepherd Mix Likely Has a Brain Tumor–Not Arthritis?
I took my beautiful dog to a new, very experienced vet who concludes that her most likely dx is a CNS serious illness–most likely a brain tumor.

He says her gait is very unusual, and not at all characteristic of arthritis, which he says usually affects 1 or 2 joints–not all 4 limbs at the same time. He also palpated the joints and said they are not swollen, and she did not cry out in pain or try to withdraw the limbs from palpation.

Blood was taken, and it was 100 percent normal. All blood cell, kideney, liver, throid function, etc. was fine.

But my dog can barely walk 3 houses down from mine and struggles sometimes to remain upright without falling over. She has pooped in the house now for around 2 months. She is very anorexic. When she was picked up by the pound 6 years ago on the streets, she weighed 45.0. Yesterday, only 41.6. My brother the human MD says this is consistent with cancer and not arthritis.

The new vet tells me to try to get her to take Rimadyl for pain over the next 3 days and see if she can have some quality of life before being “put to sleep.” I wish she would eat more–I offer her tuna, turkey, chicken, freeze dried liver, pork chops….and she shows little interest.

I don’t want my beautiful, gentle lady to die, but I am becoming resigned to having to put her to sleep within the next few days or weeks—but probably not months.

Any ideas to get her to eat or enjoy her life over the next few days/weeks would be greatly appreciated. God bless Sadie.

So sorry , ,it’s a real shame to have to watch her go downhill. You seem to be offering everything to try, You could try sprinkling garlic over the meat, most dogs love it. Bacon is also a real fave of dogs. The aroma alone may stimulate her to eat. Good luck

Sore joint in bum – could it be arthritis?

Question by jacqui238: Sore joint in bum – could it be arthritis?
I’m a 23 year old female, quite slim and go for walks twice a day with my dog. I don’t eat terribly, don’t drink or smoke and don’t really have any health problems that I know of. But just recently, I have started having bad pain deep on the left side of my bum when I move the joint. I don’t think it’s muscular; I can tense with no pain, but any movement and well, I almost can’t walk. The pain comes and goes, but tends to be worse after exercise and the more I use it. It hurts as the joint moves, I can really feel it. It also gets stiff, like, sometimes it won’t hurt whilst I’m exercising, but then later after I’ve been resting for a while, I’ll try to move and it will just be agony.

My great aunt got arthritis when she was young, and I’m scared that perhaps this is what is causing the pain. Does anyone know if this is likely, or have any ideas about what else it could be? I will go to the doctor if it doesn’t improve within a week, have had it for a month or so now and it seems to be getting worse.

i think its arthritis. symptoms are pain in the joints and it swells. try to have your blood uric acid check if its elevated or not. if it does. then you have an arthritis.

what kind of hot dogs are best for arthritis?

Question by Doodalicious: what kind of hot dogs are best for arthritis?

Best answer:

Answer by MerlinTheCat
chicken dogs most likely…most dogs are made from beef…and/or bums and lips of the cow ;)
Eating a lot of red meat can increase the risk of inflammatory arthritis, like rheumatoid arthritis, new findings suggest. These findings add to the list of health problems that can be caused by eating too much red meat.

Hope this helps
