Question by ckrunhard: Vet Says 12-13 y.o. German Shepherd Mix Likely Has a Brain Tumor–Not Arthritis?
I took my beautiful dog to a new, very experienced vet who concludes that her most likely dx is a CNS serious illness–most likely a brain tumor.
He says her gait is very unusual, and not at all characteristic of arthritis, which he says usually affects 1 or 2 joints–not all 4 limbs at the same time. He also palpated the joints and said they are not swollen, and she did not cry out in pain or try to withdraw the limbs from palpation.
Blood was taken, and it was 100 percent normal. All blood cell, kideney, liver, throid function, etc. was fine.
But my dog can barely walk 3 houses down from mine and struggles sometimes to remain upright without falling over. She has pooped in the house now for around 2 months. She is very anorexic. When she was picked up by the pound 6 years ago on the streets, she weighed 45.0. Yesterday, only 41.6. My brother the human MD says this is consistent with cancer and not arthritis.
The new vet tells me to try to get her to take Rimadyl for pain over the next 3 days and see if she can have some quality of life before being “put to sleep.” I wish she would eat more–I offer her tuna, turkey, chicken, freeze dried liver, pork chops….and she shows little interest.
I don’t want my beautiful, gentle lady to die, but I am becoming resigned to having to put her to sleep within the next few days or weeks—but probably not months.
Any ideas to get her to eat or enjoy her life over the next few days/weeks would be greatly appreciated. God bless Sadie.

So sorry , ,it’s a real shame to have to watch her go downhill. You seem to be offering everything to try, You could try sprinkling garlic over the meat, most dogs love it. Bacon is also a real fave of dogs. The aroma alone may stimulate her to eat. Good luck
