My dog isinpain, will it get better?

Question by jessie.: My dog isinpain, will it get better?
my dogs back left leg is hurting or something?
She doesn’t walk on it at all, she hasn’t gotten in an accident or anything but I think it’s arthritis, because sheis very old.
I heard that it gets bad in winter, so once it starts getting warm again, will she be back to normal?
It makes me very sad when she can barely walk let alone climb the stairs, or onto my bed. :(

Aw….well I would call a vet first of all. If you can’t do that, just give her lot’s of TLC to the best of your ability. Pick her up and put her on your bed gently. Pet her a lot, talk to her, even sing to her. Maybe give her a special treat to distract her a bit. I hope she feels better! :)

Question by : My dog is on Rimadyl 4 awhile, he is now having side effects, is there a better choice?
He is a pitbull and his front leg is swollen and he can’t go without meds 4 his arthritis. he is on glucosamine too. He has hot spots, runny eyes, general malaise, limping, weight loss. He is 6 years old.

Answer by sara
rimadyl’s side effect is that it effects the liver…not what you mentioned.

something else is going on..hot spots are normal, shave them down
and get the ointment from the vet they will go away.
funny eyes, well drops will fix that.

limping is cause his joints hurt, it’s just like people with bad knees.
what does the vet say?

if he is overweight, weight loss will be good in the long run, but you need to find out what is causing the weight loss.

i had my 120 german sherpard on rimadyl for 3 or 4 years..it cost $ 100 a month, but it made a big difference in his ability to get around.
eventually i had to have him put down when he could not walk at all and was showing a multitude of symptons by that time he was 16 and for a large dog that is a long life. still, i hated to do it but i knew he was in pain.

your dog needs some tests to see what is going on. good luck i know how expensive the vet charges are…..worse than people doctors.

Question by Nola: What is better for senior dog with arthritis? Metacam or Rimadyl?
My 12 year old Airedale’s back right leg will shake uncontrollably, usually after a long walk. By the next day he is limping. I give him a dose of Metacam at night and he is great for quite a few days again. But I am worried about the long term or more frequent use of Metacam, as he gets older and/or needs pain relief more often… I’ve seen where Rimaydl has been sued due to side effects, so now I’m worried about Rimaydl too. Is there an anti-inflammation drug for dogs you can give daily that is safer? Or more safe? I know all drugs have some side effects. Any insight out there would be wonderful. Thank you
Thanks for all the answers. I’d love to know what else to research besides Rimadyl and the NSAIDs. Also, please understand I am not above using drugs! I absolutely agree with quality of life. That said, my dog is not in bad shape right now and anytime he limps he gets Metacam. I don’t believe in him having to suffer ANY pain either. Basically I wanted to know if there were other medications to research when the time comes that he needs pain relief more often. But it sounds like the best bet is to talk over my concerns with my Vet. Thanks everyone.

All anti-inflammatories have harmful side effects that are possible, and those are increased with long-term use. None are particularly safer than others, they just have different types of risks. You need to discuss the benefits and risks of each option with your vet, as the right choice for your specific dog will depend on a number of factors. There are also other choices beyond Rimadyl and Metacam.

get Dermax from the vet.
Its is a not too expensive, and it works.

Question by Sandy Brooke: Any advice to help my doggy feel better?? (( severe hip displaysia and arthritis)) ?
She was born with hip displaysia and the arthritis is a result of it. It pains her to go outside, resulting with her making in the house. It hurts her to even stand up, so she lies on the couch almost all day. Her legs and hips are as skinny as can be, not like I dont feed her, just she doesnt use them as much so most of her weight is in her upper half. Right now im even watching her and shes laying down on the floor, with her food bowl full and all just laying while the other dogs i have stuff their faces ( as she used to do). I took her to a specialized vet for xrays, he performed lazer treatment, and then gave her steroids for the pain. of course he charges a heck of a lot too which did absolutely nothing to ease her pain. What can i do for her?? i give her glucosamine but that does nothing. Im worried about the surgery bc 1. its veryy expensive and it might now even work if her body rejects it- no gurantee to help. what can i do for her?
shes young. shes only 7 id never put her down

Question by blpeders: What is the better treatment for dog hip dysplasia, Adequan or a supplement like Springtime Joint Health pill?
My 11th Month old Puppy has dip dysplasia and the Vets have ruled out a TPO as he shows signs of arthritis. I need help deciding on what course of treatment to use. Adequan (which is a monthly shot) or a supplement pill like Springtime Joint Health Chewables which contains Glucosamine HCL and Chondroitin sulfate. Also if I go with the supplement does anybody have any recomendations? Please help
He was from the pound but thanks for the heads up.
I have explored the surgical options. He has about 30 % of the ball in the hip. Not very good. He is a lab and will most likely be a 90lb skinny dog. The surgery where they just remove the hip joint and create a fake joint is recommended for dogs under 45 pounds. I have spoke with a vet and he said that he has done it on larger dogs with success but it should be a last resort. Thank You for the help.

I use Springtime Longevity which has all the ingredients of the Joint Health as well as some other beneficial ingredients and I love it. I have a dog that has arthritis in one of her knees due to a torn ACL and knee surgery and the supplement has completely rid her of any pain at all. She has shown no sign of discomfort since we started using that.

Q&A: Whats a better way to administer pills to dogs?

Question by Ladybug: Whats a better way to administer pills to dogs?
I have tried everything to the point were i just reach for the bottle of pills and the dogs go running into the corner…. i even tried covering them with things, putting it in dog food, i tried “good” tasting pills, ect. they always seem to find the pills or not eat their food. My oldest dog ( 14yrs) has arthritis from body tumors that the vet said were from his age. He is not in pain but i give them pills for their joints becuase he limps from the tumors and arthritis at his joints. but i have to put them in their mouths. THey don’t fight to much, but i don’t like that they hide form it… i have been gving them the pill then giving them a treat,….. what else can in do.

Answer by Gabrielle B
Crush the pill into powder and put it into mince……or if the dog gets wise to that, stradle it with your legs, with its head facing away from you, pull his/her head back, push your fingers into the corners of both sides of his/her mouth and quickly shove the pill as far back into the throat as you can

Question by dindy: I was told my dog has arthritis of the spine does it get better or worse ?
I have it on steriods right now and tramadol for pain . It’s been three days now and I dont see any improvements. He is dragging his one left leg and having a very hard time just to get him up to go outside and do his business. He was fine one day and then one night i was letting him out for the night and he just collasped and then had trouble walking since then. I do not want to see him in pain and since I live in a house that you have to walk down a couple of steps to get outside this is becomming very hard now for him in just less then 48 hrs.

He is 8 yrs old part lab and part chow he dont even wag his tail when you talk to him anymore just lays on this cushion . He is going in on Sat for xrays , I just dont know what to do. I love him to death, but do not want to see him in pain and live a life like this if this is how his life will be like . I cant even pick him up to help him down the stairs cause he growls at me. Does anybody have experience in this dept Im very worried
Thank you all for your answers. He started the tramabol this afternoon and is just so sleepy i guess that is from the pain meds.
I guess in my heart im hoping between the pain meds and steriods which he is going to be cut down starting tomorrow will work. I know he will never run or play no more but if I can get him where he can still at least walk and not be in pain I will be so happy. I just hate to put him down if there is any chance he might get a little bit better
the thing he is not a large dog that is why im shocked by all this. He is just a middle size dog maybe 20 pounds 30 at the most . I did talk to my vet about rimadyl and she is going to start to give that to him after the steriods. He has been on his steriods since Tuesday and the tramadol since this late afternoon. How long does it take for steriods to take effect ?

Answer by Ley .
I suggest you put him down.Arthrightus is a serious condition for a dog, and I think it mainly just gets worse as the life goes on.
This is just my personal opinion, ultimately it’s your decision, and your veteranarian may suggest that he will get better, in which case I would take his suggestion.

Q&A: Dog Arthritis? Ways to care better for an older dog?

Question by ChelseaNoel C.: Dog Arthritis? Ways to care better for an older dog?
I recently found out my dog Cinnamon was not being well cared for as I thought she was. I decided TODAY to go and take her away from my brother and uncle. Even though the pet deposit was 400 Dollars! I did it for my darling Cinni. She turned 14 yesterday and I am going to pick her up tonight. She has arthritis and I have to give her baby aspirin everyday. She also cannot hear well bc of mites. And I just want to make her happy because at the moment she is being kept outside…. In the cold.(Even though it is Texas, Too cold for her right now). I cannot wait to go and get her.

So My questions are:

How can I help the arthritis more?

How can I treat the mites better than flushing them out?

How to better her life and keep her happy?

Plus I have two cats that must get used to her and I’m hoping they cope.

Thank you!
I recently moved in August and left her in the care of my mother. She moved out as well and was left with my brother and uncle. I could not bring her with me at first but now I can.

I have had her all her life, So I know she has missed me and will be happier with me.
She only weighs about 20 lbs. And when I have taken her to the vet before, he said she is getting nasty ears from being allergic to outside! So thats why I am also glad to be bringing her in! But I figured there maybe something I could buy to help out her ears.

The vet can help you with both problems the mites need treating with medication from your vet and the arthritis can also be treated by your vet as well
