Question by Kay: Besides, teeth- are there other ways to know your dog’s age?
so judging by his teeth- I think our new dog about 10 months-1 year old.
but he doesn’t act his age at all- I am thinking he is older, like about 3-4, maybe older. (he is very calm and obedient, never chews and almost ignores most of the toys we got him)
If his previous owners cleaned his teeth regularly, could that make them appear to be younger?

He was found on the streets and no one claimed him so we have no idea what his history is…
He is also not neutered but is very well potty trained, we haven’t had any trouble with him marking the house.

We will be taking him to the vet very soon, as he is also limps occasionally (maybe it’s arthritis?) and to get him fixed. but I just wanted some advice in the mean time.

Thanks!
*** It doesn’t matter to me if he is an older dog- He is still the perfect dog for us… I just want to know how old he is.

Question by alwayssunny: found a hard lump on my dogs hip today any ideas what would cause this?
He’s a medium sized 11 yr old mixed breed dog. The lump is about golf ball size. He doesn’t want me to touch it as it seems to hurt him. Just been on a diet as seemed to be having trouble with arthritis. He’s now lost all the weight he needs to but I’ve just noticed the very hard lump on his hip bone….We will be taking him to the vets tomorrow but wondered if anyone could give me any help? Thank you.

Question by LizzyAlex1: What is on my dogs paw? On the corner of her paw pad there is a perfectly smooth white ball that is hard?
She’s limping on that leg for a few weeks but I thought she was getting some arthritis because she was more stiff than limping. Now today i noticed the ball on there because she is limping more. Shes an american bulldog? Does anyone know where I can find a link or maybe someone has had this with there dog? I had a dog when she was old she got benign tumors but they were never perfectly smooth or white.

Question by † Sophia †: *PLS READ! My dog’s entire hind foot is swollen and raw – taking him to the vet this afternoon?
Brief background:

My dog acted 100% normal (from what I could tell) up until yesterday when he woke up limping. He is 15 years old and does have some arthritis, so I just thought he was having a bad day. We took him for a walk and he seemed better for the rest of the day, so just assumed he had some stiff joints.

This morning, he seemed even worse. I decided to take a closer look and under his fur on his foot, his entire little paw is swollen and raw. I feel terrible because I had no idea. It must be something that aggravated quickly because again, it seems to be bothering him even more today.

I called the vet and am taking him in later this afternoon.

My worry is that it could be cancer? My dog did have a malignant tumor removed from his rear end in spring of 2008.

Do you think it could be something else that is fixable/treatable?

What do you think? Let me know if I need to supply more info…

His right hind paw is purplish-red, raw, swollen and tight. Does not appear to be oozing or weepy.

I know my vet will be able to tell me, but I’m just really nervous and upset now and would like to have some idea.

Thanks for your help.

Question by dansand28: Can rheumatoid arthritis be contagious from human to dogs??

Best answer:

Answer by Spyderbear
Rheumatoid arthritis is not contagious from humans to dogs, or from one human to another for that matter. It is an auto-immune disease. There is no bacteria or virus causing it, therefore it cannot be transmitted.

What is my dog’s likely prognosis?

Question by Anna P: What is my dog’s likely prognosis?
My dog has been off colour for about a week. He hasn’t been showing as much interest in his food (he has been eating just not as enthusiastically) and has been generally lethargic. I had taken him to the vet on Saturday but the vet couldn’t find anything and told me to see how he went and bring him back if he didn’t pick up.
This morning he seemed a lot worse having problems walking and I made a vet appointment for this evening. By the time I got home from work he could not even stand (he would get up and lie down again straightaway). The vet gave him a huge dose of steriods and told me if it didn’t help him he would have to be put to sleep. I have got him home now and within an hour of having the injection he has improved enormously. He is standing up, walking round and asking for food which he has eaten.
I was so upset at the vet I didn’t take in a word she said – he goes back Monday for tests (When I left it was like if he still can’t walk to bring him back tommorrow to be put to sleep and if he improved to bring him back Monday for tests).

What illnesses could he have that could be helped so fast by steroids?
He is 12, a golden retrivever and has arthritis but the vet was sure this incident was not arthritis as he was not in pain on the examination. In fact the vet said he wasn’t feeling things that should have caused pain.
To add to this. He hasn’t had any tests yet. We could not even get him out of the car at the vets so the vet treated him in the car. He literally could not stand or walk at the time. She said she will test him on Monday to see what the cause is – it was literally first aid treatment he had tonight.

Some disc related issues can cause immobilization & those are often treated with steroids when possible. If steroids don’t help operations are usually the next choice. (They run in the several thousand dollars range)

The disc can slip out of place & push on the nerves in the spinal cord, preventing the message being sent from the brain to the legs for them to move.
More often than not it’s not painful for the dog because they literally can’t feel their legs.

I went through this issue with a 13 year old dog I had.
