i had to put my dog down yesterday?

Question by steven k: i had to put my dog down yesterday?
i had to make the decision to put my five and a half year dog down. took her to the vets the week before and they told me she had really dysplacia and arthritis in wich they put her on tablets. soon after she would start screaming and go all rigid so i phoned the vets and they said she would get worse before she got better and then again she had a bad turn when i got no sleep the next night because she was screaming and i was trying to console her the next morning i took her straight to the vet and they said there is nothing wrong with her…..she had another bad turn on the fri and i had the physio come see her on the sat and she got a bit better but then mon this week she couldnt get up wouldnt dink anything and was just not with it. i called the vet yesterday and told them i want them to come out and see her i cant just leave her like that…they came out and said they r sorry they didnt realise how bad she is and she should be put down cos they think she has a brain tumour
how could they have let my poor girl suffer like that by just not listening to me when i kept on telling them something is wrong and then to add to all my pain i dont know what she died of and i feel really bad that no one would help me whil she was suffering i am really torn apart

I am sorry for you. It is so hard when you loose a pet. My dog is 13 and I expect we will have to make the same decision soon. It just breaks my heart. Like loosing a child. Just try to be grateful that she is out of pain now.

My parents are reluctant to put our dog down?

Question by Mandy: My parents are reluctant to put our dog down?
My question is should I encourage them to go through with it? They have been considering the idea for a while and I think it is well past my dog’s time. He’s only 14, but he has lost the luster in his eyes. He sleeps the majority of the day and has sores all over from lying down so much. He has Cushing’s disease (which causes weakening of abdomen and leg muscles and excessive thirst and urination), arthritis, and recurrent infection. He has poor appetite, never wags his tail and has great difficulty getting up and moving around. I pity him. But my parents don’t want to let go. I love our dog, but he seems to be miserable.

Input on putting my dog down?

Question by Nicole: Input on putting my dog down?
Our family dog, Scooter, was struck with vestibular disease last year. He’s 14 years old and is on his last limb. He has a bad leg which makes his walking even more unstable. He somewhat drags it from time to time. He has accidents constantly and he can’t be left home alone for more than around three hours because of it. He still eats and has a love for food, but yet a majority of the time he just looks depressed. Maybe it’s because we can’t give him constant attention anymore since we don’t have time. His sister is extremely healthy compared to him and we expect her to last at least a couple more years. But the rest of the family is talking about putting him down. I can tell there’s still some happiness left in him…but..I’m just not sure about anything. With the accidents, falling down, bad leg (which he chews constantly making it bleed), arthritis, and everything else…maybe putting him down is the best thing to do. I’m 50/50 on it. I love him to death and I can’t imagine ending his life unnaturally…but then again, he’s taking a toll on our family and I have no idea how happy he is or how much pain he is in…
He doesn’t have a bladder infection. The accidents come with having vestibular disease.
I should have also mentioned Scooter is deaf. He can hear loud claps and snaps, but that’s about it.

Put a bandage around his leg so he will not chew at it. And if he still continues give him an anti flea coat of shampoo or something. Do not put your dog down.

Question by Molly: Help with old dog? He doesn’t have to be put down, does he?
Ok, we have an English Bull dog, he’s a wonder family pet and we all love him a lot! There’s no medical issues with him, but recently he’s lost bladder control and is peeing randomly everywhere. (especially when he eats/drinks) He’s 12 years old (the average life span being about 8-10 yrs) so he’s kinda old. We don’t know if he’s just old and should be put down OR if he my have a bladder infection, but I’m not sure about that because he’s a male. Also, it’s incredibly difficult to get him to the vet because he cant get in or out of a car anymore because of his arthritis, even of we help him. He falls up and down stairs too. :( Another thing… He smells terrible all the time (yes, we do groom him). We know bulldog’s aren’t the best smelling breed, but for the past year he literally smells of death… he just reeks! :(

[oh, and if your wondering if his peeing because he's not house trained, that's not what's wrong. He's very well house trained]

We don’t want him put down.. but we don’t want him suffering either. Any Ideas?

Answer by Sarah S
I think it just may be time to put him down. It isn’t uncommon for dogs to lose control of their bladder when they get older. They actually have doggy diapers for it. But the fact that he is also falling down stairs is a real indicator that he is nearing the end. See if he seems in pain. Also when he pees does he know to move or does he sit in his pee, because that is another sign that you dog is nearing an end. I know it is hard but I think you should take your dog to the vet for an opinion. Make him comfortable and remember your dog has had a long fruitful life. Best of wishes.

Question by eycepixi: My husband’s dog is suffering – how do I talk to him about putting her down?
My husband and I have been together for 4 years, and he has had the same wonderful black lab for almost 12. For the past couple of years she’s been going downhill, and it seems now that she’s nearing the end. She’s got arthritis in her hips and growths that the vet says aren’t cancerous, but that are obviously painful. She doesn’t move around unless it’s to eat, go out or run around in circles when her hip goes out. It’s awful and I can’t stand to see her this way, but this isn’t about me. It’s his dog and it’s his decision and I know that this is going to kill him. How do I have this conversation with him? I’ve tried a couple of times in the last year or so to bring it up and he insists he’ll do it when the time comes, but she’s suffering and he refuses to acknowledge it. What do I do?

Answer by cutie101
Tell your husband that everything dies at one point. Tell him that the dog lived a long and happy life as you see it. Tell him this nicely and also add that it may be time for the labs turn to go. Something on that line.

How do get a dog to lay down in a car?

Question by paradigm85: How do get a dog to lay down in a car?
My dog is a very large Shepherd/Lab/etc mutt LOVES car rides more then anything. This weekend, my boyfriend and I will be traveling about 10 hours to my parent’s house her, a trip she has made at least 3 times before. Although she is an excellent traveler, I can never get her to lay down and rarely will she even sit in the back of my car. I have a smaller car, and although she certainly has enough room to lay down comfortably, she does not. I think part of the trouble for her is that she can’t do her little spinning around thing before she sits. Plus, I know she is excited and likes to stick her head out of the window. But you think after hours and hours she would want to relax? Sometimes I can get her to lay down for maybe 30 seconds, but it always looks awkward, not like she is comfortable… and she always gets right back up.
One would think it’s not a huge issue, that I should just not worry about it – and I wouldn’t mind too much if she were in better health. But my dog is about 9 years old, a rescue, who had untreated lyme disease for years with her former owners who never gave her the meds she needed to recover. She also has arthritis and hip dysplacia. Not laying down for that long is not good for her, and I always notice that after these long rides, her legs shake when she has to go to the bathroom and she licks her joints, which she always does when she is in pain.
Any thoughts? I want her to continue enjoying these car rides with me, but I don’t want her to be in pain. I have tried nearly everything to get her to lay down in the car and I’m at my wit’s end. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

My dog is in pain and not laying down?

Question by Erica Grabenstein: My dog is in pain and not laying down?
i took Laddie for a walk yesterday and we ran some. this morning he was fine until maybe 10 and he sat down in the grass and wouldn’t move for a second. he has arthritis in his legs but usually its not this bad. he wouldn’t eat anything and then maybe 45 minutes later i gave him some cheese and he ate it. he just threw it up about 20 minutes ago. i took up his food bowl but now hes not laying down and relaxing like he usually does. hes standing in his usual spot and panting. is he in to much pain to lay or something? do you know what i can do to make him more comfortable??? 10 points for anyone who can really help my dog!!! oh and we’re going out of town on friday, but should we take him to the vet tomorrow?

Best answer:

Answer by Tiffany
You should atleast call your vet. If he isnt laying down, the number one thing that dogs do besides run, then there is a serious problem. And his arthritis may be causing him very much pain if he doesnt want to move. Get him help so he isnt in pain any more.

Should I go with my dad to put my dog down?

Question by creativemurph: Should I go with my dad to put my dog down?
We have decided its time to put our family dog down. She’s a 14 year old black lab with bad hips. She’s had joint arthritis for years now but within the past 1-2 years, she’s been getting worse. Most recently she’s been having trouble with stairs, has bathroom accidents in the house (always #2, never #1)… and seems to sleep a lot more.
We are putting her down on Tuesday morning and I don’t know if I should go. My dad is going and staying in the room when the vet does it. Our vet is great and has known our dog since she was a puppy. She said she personally wanted to do it since she loves our dog as well.
~The pros of being there: I want to go so she knows I love her and she’s always been there for me. I owe it to be there for her.
~The cons of being there: seeing that… I know its not traumatic or painful for them but I imagine its hard to see.
~The pros of staying home: I can remember her as the dog she was, not a dog lying on a vet table being put down. Allowing myself to cry and not being ashamed to cry in public (I don’t like to…)
~The cons of staying home: What is she wants me to be there? What if she doesn’t know I love her? She’s been my best friend for 14 years, she’s been there for me, I should be there for her. I kinda can’t stand the thought of her going out without seeing me there and knowing I’m there for her.

Advice?
@Jack: No its not extreme. She has difficulty walking and fell down a few stairs the other day. The vet said its now or in about a month.

@Chelsea: I did the same thing with my mother. She passed in 2009 from cancer and we had family in town. My dad and I were in the room with her when she passed. Maybe thats whats holding me back… thanks for the answer though. It helped a lot.

Q&A: Should this dog be put down?

Question by Miss Understood: Should this dog be put down?
She’s a teacup yorkie and teacups are just the product of 2 runts so they have bad genes. She is 14 years old, and has arthritis in her back legs, her knee joints pop out of place everytime she steps, and she can’t even get on the couch by herself anymore. She has coughing spasms, her breath smells sooooo bad and she doesn’t bark as much as she used too. I don’t want to kill an innocent little dog and she’s probably never gonna be put down even if she really needs it. (not mine, it’s my moms dog and she gets a little too attached too things. You know unless it’s my kinder dilploma then she just throws it away! [bitch] anyway… Please let me know what you think)
