Can I give my dog Aspirin?

Question by Jessica: Can I give my dog Aspirin?
My dog is a beagle/hound mix,11 years old(a bit overweight)and has a slipped disk in her back and sever arthritis. We took her to the vet and she prescribed her Rimadyl, but her prescription ran out a few days ago(and no refills). she’s in extreme pain. she yelps and screams when she moves and she won’t eat because she cant bend her neck or walk anywhere.

We have Tylenol,Motrin,Ibuprofen, and Aspirin. The vets office is closed so we can’t call her and ask.

what is safe to give her for now?

And no, we will NOT put her to sleep because of this. We’re trying to find other ways to get rid of this problem,so don’t say “your so inhumane, but her to sleep, blah blah blah”.

thank you :)
mhmm,im a lowlife for letting my animal live?
she is a very happy animal, shes just in pain.

so, are doctors “low lives” for trying to keep humans alive that are in sever pain and agony,or internally drowning, or having seizures every other day,or begging family and friends to kill them because of their pain?

its their professional job to keep them alive,so its my personal job to let my dog live and keep her as comfortable as possible.

please only post educated,helpful answers.

we had been giving her Aspirin before,so we’ll probably give it to her again.

I’m severely disappointed in everyone’s childish answers. think before you type, and read my entire post.

Did the vet say you can?

Its a shame that you are allowing your dog to suffer, and live in extreme agony..You are truly a lowlife.

The dog will always suffer even when you try to cover it up with medication. That is a shame that you allow her to live in this torment, you are a truthfully mindless soul ..

can i give my dog cod liver oil capsules?

Question by Red: can i give my dog cod liver oil capsules?
My 18 month old chocolate lab has OCD (not Compulsive disorder !!) – its arthritis in the elbows – he has had operation on both legs and is on tablets from the vet – Previcox. Its so sad as he wants to run but when he does he suffers. I know it shouldnt be a case of money but these tablets are so expensive. I was wondering if I could put cod liver oil in his food like we have for our joints. He is on the Hills food which has all the fish oils etc in and these Previcox tablets. Please advise. I dont want to ask the vet cos I know he will say no – he is very money orientated – but I need to know if its possible and wont harm the dog in any way.

Can you give Metacam to reptiles?

Question by amy312003: Can you give Metacam to reptiles?
My vet prescribed Metacam to my leopard gecko for pain. I did some research, and found it is usually prescribed to dogs for arthritis.

It is not endorsed for reptiles by the food and drug administration for reptiles, either, only dogs and cats.
So I can assume that it is possible to overdose a gecko on this medicine? What if he accidentally got one more dose than he was supposed to? (He was supposed to get .1 cc per day, and I think, I’m not sure, though, he got 2 doses in one day).

Yes, it is also safe for small animals and birds as long as the suspension is correct.
One extra dose should not hurt him, they will sometimes prescribe it twice a day instead of once a day if they think the pain should be bad enough.

Question by morgan: What to give my dog after getting lyme disease & anemia?
The tick that caused my dog’s lyme disease basically caused her to become anemic, and her blood was seriously lacking in hemoglobins.

What kinds of foods / dog foods should I give her to help her recover ? She no longer has lyme disease, but I feel like she still has anemic tendencies like her front legs are weak some times. I’m giving her glucosamine not everyday, but every other day to prevent arthritis [she's 12 y/o]

so I was wondering what foods to give her to help with those tendencies thank you ina dvance

My Pom has AIHA. He is on an extremely low dose of prednisone and his red blood count is coming up, albeit slowly.

In addition to his regular food, I have special iron fortified vitamin drops (which I got from the vet) that I put on his food.

Here’s what he takes: http://www.prnpharmacal.com/liquitinic/feline.php

Question by Rebecca S: Is it safe to give an 80lb lab baby aspirin for arthritis?
My 7 or 8 year old dog, Scarlett, is an 80lb black lab and for the past few weeks she has been crying when I take her out of her crate in the morning. She limps a little and seems a little stiff. I think she has arthritis. I haven’t called the vet yet but this morning she was crying and I felt so bad I decided to give her some baby aspirin. She was crying again tonight so I have her another one. I’m worried it may be bad for her; human medicine doesn’t always react to animals the same way.
Getting her a special animal medicine is out of my budget right now. If baby aspirin isn’t good for her, what else could I give her?
http://www.vetinfo.com/daspirin.html
Of course I’m going to contact the vet, but I have class every morning and work every afternoon until evening. I love my big baby girl. I just don’t want her to hurt until I can get her there.

How big is her crate? If its only when she comes out she may be stiff from laying in it.

Otherwise, you shouldn’t give an animal any human medication without the ok and instructions from a vet, because we don’t know how their bodies will react to something not made for them.

I’d try and get her to the vet, and if you don’t have all the money ask about a payment plan, some vets will do it, some wont. Our old vet did it but when we moved it took us a long time to find a new one that did.
Otherwise there may be a vet that wont charge unless treatment is given, one time we had no money at all but we had to take our dog to the vet, and we found one that will examine the animal for free, they will tell you if it needs treatment and how much it will cost, but whether to go for the treatment is up to you, if you don’t you don’t have to pay, in that case our dog had Kennel cough and the vet said we could give him Robutussin and wrote out how much to give him, which worked, and didn’t cost us anything.
So sometimes human medications can help animals, but I’d never give them any without a vet saying to.

Question by rachelle: is there anything I can give my dog to help with his pain?
I’m pretty sure it’s just arthritis, but my dog is really sore and he can barely move. If he tries to stand up he starts whimpering. It’s so sad I want to help him, but I don’t think there’s much I can do. Can I give him ibuprofen or something?

if you need to know he’s a 10 year old, soft coated wheaten terrier.
I did massage him, and I’m going to wait another day or so before I take him to the vet. the vet usually says there’s nothing I can do that’ll be $ 5,000. and the ibuprofen I guessed he probably wouldn’t be able to take it but I just wanted to make sure

Answer by GotNewfs?
Never give Ibuprofen or Tylenol. They can be very toxic to dogs. Call your vet for some ideas. There are many medications that the vets use that help a LOT! Maybe a trip to the vet is in order!!!!!
