Question by M L: Dosage of glucosamine for dog?
I have a 65 lb. dog who yesterday started wincing and having a hard time going up stairs, out of the blue. Took him to emergency vet, did x-rays, said it may be spondyliosis causing the pain, otherwise everything else checks out. No signs of arthritis or trauma. (We are thinking it may be a pulled muscle, but who knows for sure). Dog is about 7 (rescue, so not sure of exact age). Vet gave me some anti-inflammatory pills but pup is still in pain when he rises or attempts stairs. Thought I should try getting him on glucosamine immediately – what dose is safe to give him, as I plan to get them at the local health food store, not pet store? I will be returning to vet Monday if he is still in pain, but thought the glucosamine would not hurt to be started immediately.

depends on how much is in the capsule
also depends on the weight of your dog.
go to the pet store or website say of…COSEQUIN and look up the dosage and analysis of each capsule and compare that to the human ingredients

Question by Jamie: Sick Dog please help, Glucosamine Questions?
I have a 15 year old dog who has always been in great shape and suddenly the other day he decided to walk very crooked so we took him to the vet and the vet said he has arthritis…
he gave us a pill called rimadyl which we have been giving him faithfully but its still hard for him to walk he can barely get up..
I read other posts and lots of information saying you could give a dog glucosamine and chondroitin. We have some at the house its 750 mg of glucosamine and 600mg of Chondroitin per pill… my dog is 50 pounds and is a Shar- Pei. how much of this pill can i give him per day?
This is a human pill is that ok? i read on other pages and it said it was fine.. but i need some opinoins.
How long will it take to get him back to normal?
Should i double dose him and then start cutting back as time goes on?
Please help

Look for a dog hip supplement, feed a senior diet that has it in it. Zukes Hip Action is a wonderful meaty treat for dogs hips and it works great.

Question by Joel D: Can you give a dog human glucosamine?
I have an older dog who was hit by a car when she was younger. She severely fractured a front leg. It healed and she can run on it, but it gives her trouble. She has some arthritis in all of her legs, but it’s worse in the previously injured leg. The glucosamine for dogs is very expensive, but some of the glucosamine packaged for humans looks to have the same ingredients and is much cheaper. I’m wondering if this is another case where they are just trying to profit and packaging it in a container with a dogs picture on the bottle and charging more or are there ingredients in the humans brand that are bad for dogs or things that are in the dog glucosamine not in the human brand. My uncle buys a wormer for his horse that’s packaged for cows. They had a friend who chemically tested it, he worked in a lab, and it was the same, just packaged and priced different. Is that the case here. Please only respond if you your a vet or someone who really know what’s going on and not someone who tried it once or knows someone who did. Thank you.

Call your vet and ask them. It is probably given by the weight of the animal (1 pill per 20 lbs for example). They would know best.

Question by Eilean Ban: Any recommendations for a glucosamine supplement?
My 10-year-old dog was recently diagnosed with the beginning stages of arthritis in her lower spine and my vet told me to get her started on a good glucosamine supplement but she really didn’t recommend any particular brand or anything. So I was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations on a brand that they’ve used. Or does it even really matter?

The brand doesn’t make a difference. The dose is based on your dogs weight.

They work for some humans, but I’d consult a vet instead of Yahoo Answers before feeding them to my dog.
If you care about her, pay for professional advice rather than picking an answer from someone you don’t know.

Question by Coconut232: Is giving glucosamine as a supplement OK in this case?
I know glucosamine is excellent for dogs with arthritis….but…I have a 2 year old Shiba Inu who I take for walks and play fetch with every day. His activity level on a scale of 1-10 is about a 5-6….he doesn’t do any strenuous work or agility or anything, and does not have bad hips or joints or anything….
I want to start giving him something called “Hip Action” dog treats just as a supplement….he would only gets 1 treat a day and it is 300mg of glucosamine.
Is it unnecessary or unsafe to give a young dog that doesn’t do too much exercise and has no joint problems glucosamine for maintenance? thanks.

Do not give your dog something without talking to your vet first. Just in case.
