does anyone have a doberman ? how old do they usually live.
i dont want to ever put her to sleep , i want her to be able to get up and around.
i want her quality of life to be better.

she is only fed a normal amount of food.
i will however try to cut her food back a bit, but at 12…my heart and brain says that this may be her last year?
i will try glucosime as u guys suggested and see what vet can get for me.

Have your vet examine your dog to make sure it is arthritis causing the problems. Rimadyl is a good anti-inflammatory for dogs. There are natural supplements such as glucousamine and chondroitin available. Hydrotherapy is also an option. Ask your vet what would be best for your dog.

You go to your orthopedic vet, and get the appropriate medications. You do NOT ask total strangers on YA’s for advice.

Question by ∆∞NikoMKVLI∞∆: Is soreness in the hips a symptom of Lyme’s disease?
A few months back my dog started displaying signs of hip discomfort. It has slowly gotten worse and is most noticeable in the morning right when she wakes up. She gets up slowly and has trouble going up stairs. Other than that, she seems fine. She can go on long walks, fetch, swim, whatever. Also, she is only 2 1/2 years old so I hope that would rule out arthritis and/or hip dysplasia.
Uhave2bekiddingme: I’m sorry that you’re mad at your life and feel the need to be condescending. She hasn’t been to the vet because it was barely noticeable. Now it has gotten worse, she’s going to the vet next week, TYVM!
Sheri: Thank you for your arrogance. I’m not the type to take my dog to a vet anytime any little thing seems wrong. That would be a waste of money. And considering it’s Sunday, and tomorrow is Labor Day, I can’t get my dog into the vet until Tuesday, which is when I will be taking her in. Also, I’m not just gonna make my dog lay around all day every day just because she exhibits signs of hip soreness in the morning. I have already taken precautions geared towards hip dysplasia, such as feeding animal parts high in glucosamine/chondroitin and supplementing with a high quality omega 3 oil.
Arrogance is behaving in a superior manner toward those perceived as inferior. So instead of acting like my superior and informing me what I have misinterpreted, you could have just answered my original question. You have been arrogant in your entire reply. Do not try to pretend you know whether or not I am a caring dog owner. I take her on walks because SHE wants to, not just me. And don’t pretend to think you know that I want to wait to take her to the vet. I called the vet and set up an appointment as soon as I perceived the situation needing medical attention. Thanks for the luck!
Felicia: I’m not being aggressive, I’m being assertive. I understand what a public forum is and I understand some people don’t know what they’re talking about… I tend to call them out.

Answer by UHave2BeKiddingMe NEW ACCOUNT AGAIN
It is most likely hip dysplasia.
Sorry you thought only old dogs get it.
My friends just had elbow dysplasia and hip replacement surgery done on their 17 month old Golden Retriever. (Not at the same time). Total cost for surgery $ 12,000.
Why if this has been going on for months, has this dog not been to the vet.
The dog needs diagnosis.

Question by Melissa K: Any ideas for a dog with arthritic hips?
Our lab mix is almost 7 years old and is starting to take a little longer to get up from a laying position. I think her hips are getting a little creaky, though she doesn’t seem to be in any pain, just a little slower. Any suggestions about what we can do to slow the arthritis – certain foods, OTC medications? She has been taking a joint vitamin for just a couple days that I bought at the pet store, but I wanted to see if anyone had any other suggestions.

Answer by Yo LO!
My suggestion would be to have her checked by the vet.
It might be dysplasia and it could be arthritis, but only your vet can properly diagnose and treat it.

Question by eva d: what relief is there for an age 9 lab retriever dog with arthritis in hips?
Best answer:
Answer by walking lady
Plenty. First, take her to her vet for x-rays so the vet can determine how bad it is. The vet can then tell you if your dog can be kept pain-free with glucosamine chondroitin with MSM (which isn’t prescription) and the correct dosage. If the arthritis is too bad for that, the vet will prescribe meds to keep your lab pain-free. Please don’t wait – there’s lots of help for your dog.

You can buy the same stuff at your local pharmacy or supermarket in the vitamin department.
It’s much less expensive in “human” form, but it has the same ingredients.
I gave it to my Rott, but for another condition. It definitely helped her. Try it and see if it helps your dog.

Question by Barbara L: does anyone have an elderly dog with arthritis of the hips?
I have a collie-sheltie who will be seventeen in July this year. I have given him MSM glucosamine condrontin ,hip action, zeel probiotics, multi-vits, Krumble, etc. etc.daily and an occasional Remadyl It’s becoming more and more difficult for him to just get up. He doesn’t seem to be in pain but it breaks my heart to watch him struggle like this. He is in good health otherwise.

Answer by MyVetTeam2
Talk to your vet. There are some good NSAIDs that can help when used regularly. I give my elderly Deramaxx and COsequin daily along with selected supplements. Don’t try just anything on the market, take your vets professional advice. An congratulations on keeping him healthy for 16 years so far!
