Question by Debbie W: What kind of human medications can our older labs take for arthritis?
We are in the economic crisis, losing our business, and just a few weeks from having to leave our home. We have been living on credit cards, which are almost maxed out. Our two older labs are now on Metacam and Tramadol for arthritis pain, but we can no longer afford it. We have had them on one aspirin per day previously, but it doesn’t seem to give them any relief. We’d like to try Aleve, as it seems to work for my boyfriend and myself really well, but do not know if dogs tolerate it well. Does anyone have any knowledge of human meds that our dogs may take, (besides baby aspirin and adult aspirin), that may help with arthritis?

Call the vet and ask – calls are free. NEVER give human medications without a vet’s permission. Some human medications, even in small doses, are harmful or fatal.

Question by Amy P: How can I treat my black lab’s arthritis without using medications that will increase bleeding?
She has seen the vet and was given a cox 2 inhibitor that has resulted in stomach ulceration and gastrointestinal bleeding. She is now recovering from the stomach trouble, but can hardly get around due to arthritic pain. Do vets ever use tylenol type products on dogs? I’d imagine that would be harmful to a lab’s liver. Suggestions? I would hate to have her in pain and hate more to euthanize her.

Find a Holistic Vet and talk to others about what they’ve done: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TruthAboutVaccines/

My 4 month old chocolate lab has hip dysplasia and needs corrective surgery. The vet gave us 2 options. One is a surgery center that specializes in animals. This place can do a very extensive operation, putting pins in my dog’s bones to help put everything back together. This will cost about $2000. The other option is for the vet to do the operation and to remove the ball joint of his hip, and fuse him back together. This will cost about $800, and he will have problems for the rest of his life. Then, of course, there’s always the option to put him down.
Has anyone been through this? If so, what did you do? If you could go back & do it again, would you do the same thing or something different? Will my dog have problems for the rest of his life?
I just looked up dysplasia online & I might have gotten a wrong diagnosis. His hips are actually aligned up properly, but his femur is completely fractured off off the hip.
