Question by ♥shelter puppies rule♥: ester C to help prevent dogs arthritis?
This was mentioned on another forum she said a study was done where dogs since they were puppies were supplemented with Ester C had less joint and arthritis problems when they were old. anyone ever hear this before and supplement your dog with it?
no but when i had googled i found this website,
http://www.yourdoghealth.com/dog_ester-c_study.htm
this was what this person wrote on the other forum:
” I did a bunch of research on Ester C. There have been studies done on it. Two german shepherds(if I’m remembering correctly) who both had hip dysplasia, were bred. They supplemented the mother with Ester C while she was pregnant. When she had the puppies they continued to supplement the puppies with vitamin C. Once they were adults, not one of them had hip dysplasia or any signs of any type of joint problems.
There was also a study done on dogs that already have hipdysplasia. Some were sort of overdosed Ester C and others weren’t given any. The dogs that were supplemented the Ester C didn’t show any signs of pain. While the hipdysplasia still existed there, they did not feel the pain. ”
i pm’d her where she read those and i’ll def let you know if she answers Loki

Question by Kelly G: What’s the best way to prevent canine arthritis?
I have a 6 year old female shepard mix & she also has some rotweiler in her too. Both breed are very suseptible to arthritis, so I’m worried about her getting arthritis in the future. I take her for daily walks and to the dog park occasionally (usually weekends) so she can run around with our other 1 year old pup. She also swims a lot in the summer. So what can I do?

Since it is genetic there isn’t anything you can do about that part of it. One of the best things you can do to help if she does have arthritis is keep her weight under control. Surgical joint repair is a possibility of course, but you are talking about a lot of money with that.
Here is a helpful link with practical suggestions. Best of luck.

Question by Shirley: Is it possible to prevent Hip Dysplasia in my 8 month old Labrador?
My lab is only 8 months old, and this started about 2 weeks ago. Almost every time she stand up her hips pop. I’m worried that she might get Hip Dysplasia. My aunt has a lab mix with this and she gives her joint vitamins. The vitamins seem to be helping her dog a lot. Is it possible that if I start giving my dog joint vitamins that it could prevent her from getting Hip Dysplasia? What are the best kind to get her? Could this have happened because she grew so fast? When she was 6 months old she was already the size of a full grown lab, she hasn’t grown since then.

I have only heard that ‘joint vitamins’ are a scam, at least with humans.

Like in dogs such as German shepherds. Can you prevent cancer or hip dysplasia or arthritis? You know things like that? Because if they’re healthy, they live longer. What can you do to keep your dog healthy and long living?

Healthy diet, proper exercise, etc. Look into raw feeding.
