Question by Alice R: How long can Valley Fever stay dormant in a greyhound before causing real heath problems?
My greyhound raced in Arizona but has live in BC with us for 5 almost 6 years. She has always had minor coughing and lameness due to what we thought was arthritis. In November of 2006 she was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (bone cancer). OS tends to take dogs quickly and we opted for pain management only but now 9 months later she has a large tumor in her right leg and is sometimes completely lame and other times looks fine and runs full speed. She eats well and most of the time is a happy dog.
Someone has suggested this could be Valley Fever but is it possible almost 6 years later? Vets up here do not know of Vallet fever so i am trying to do research before bringing this possibility to them.

My Dog is having problems?

Question by Julez: My Dog is having problems?
My Pekingese dog has been crying out in agony a lot. I feel so sorry for the little guy. He’s 8 years old, and my mom says it’s because he has arthritis. Money is super tight and we cant take him to the vet. I called the clinic and asked if we could work anything out, and they said no. My mom said if we did take him to the vet, they would probably just put him down.. and i REALLY don’t want that for my baby. I want to help him, but I don’t know how. Any suggestions?
there isnt an E.R. vet here, btw.

even if there was, dont you have to pay a bill?
you guys dont need to be so fucckinng rude with your answers. Im 14 years old and my parents wont listen to me! I told them to give him asprin! I told them I’d sell my playstation. I told them to take my school supplies back for money, but my dad just slapped me. Im not going to give my best friend up! I called the vet, she said if I couldnt pay, she couldnt do anything. WHICH IS TOTALLY UNFAIR. My parents are so freaking cruel!!!! My dad said he’s going to just shoot him to “Put him out of his misery” :(

Vets do not put down a dog with arthritis – there are plenty of meds to help them. Besides that, arthritis isn’t something that can be diagnosed at home. If you can’t get help for your dog that’s in pain, you need to surrender him to a pekingese rescue. It’s beyond cruel to let a dog continue to suffer. You might want to consider selling the computer you’re using so you can take him to the vet for help.

My dog has been having leg problems.?

Question by Jen: My dog has been having leg problems.?
This has been going on for months. I’d hoped it would resolve itself but unfortunately it hasn’t. My dog started running without putting weight on her left hind leg, so it was more of a hopping run. If you were to sit her down she spreads that leg out so it’s not really having pressure against it. One day to see where the problem was I tested her leg out. No problems with extension, but obvious pain when you push the leg up towards the hip.

Is this perhaps just arthritis? A ligament? I don’t have a lot of cash to throw around but I don’t want to skimp on her care. I’m one of those people who believe a dog is a responsibility .. and a family member .. and deserves the appropriate care. Att this point I’ve accepted I need to see the vet for this problem as I hate to see in her any discomfort. I’m just curious if people might have ideas to narrow it down for me. And if you’re wondering why it took so long for me to say let’s try a vet well, it’s because that the same mentality I have for myself. Wait it out.

Take her to the vet. She could have a bad hip socket, an old fracture (due to length of time), could be arthritis. The vet will need to do x-rays, probably under sedation in order to get a diagnosis.

My dog is having problems walking?

Question by Jade: My dog is having problems walking?
Last time, I took him to the vet was about 6 months ago for his shots and check up and the vet said he had a mild case of arthritis. It seems as though a few weeks ago like around Thanksgiving his arthritis took a turn for the worst, he can still walk but it looks like he is in a lot of pain and it takes him a couple of seconds to actually get his back legs moving. I called the vet and told him what was going on and he said there really not much we can do for him. Anyone have an similar problems with their dog and how did you cope.

I also believe that the “winter coldness” isn’t helping him out any because I know in my mother, she said it gets a lot worse in the cold air.

Your vet can give him pain medication. Make sure he is on a very healthy dry food too.

Q&A: Problems with new owner of dog, need advice quick!?

Question by Shory’s in love!: Problems with new owner of dog, need advice quick!?
So I had an adult Bull Terrier that I loved dearly. Her name was Missy, and my fiance and I owned her for about 6 months. We loved her to bits and peices but I had just started to go to school full time and he did as well, so we did not have enough time to give her as much love and attention she deserved. So I had sold her to a lady who said she knew all about Bull Terriers and loved them. I trusted her word and sold her for $ 200 which is a great price, I did not want to sell her for a lot, pretty much just to get money out of all the supplies that I gave to the lady. About five days after she buys her I got a call from a number that I didn’t recognize so I didn’t answer. Than 1 week later the buyer of my dog called saying she took Missy into the vet, and she has a mild case of Arthritis. She said the vet also thinks she is about ten years old, and I know for a fact she is Three, I have her paper work and all. Before she bought Missy, I told her how terrified she is of vets. Missy would NEVER bite a person, ever! When she is in a vets office, she gets very skiddish and jumpy. When the vet reached to touch her back leg, it hurt her so she jumped. He stated that she TRIED to bite him. Maybe she did, maybe she didn’t, but she than begins to tell me he wants to put her to sleep because of it. I said I would not allow that, and I said I would pay her vet bill, and give her money back, and I would drive down to get her. She agreed, when I called her to find out when I could come down, she lived about 2 hours away, she said Missy had stayed over night at the vets office, because the vet said she was endangering her family. I said I would be happy to meet her down there and pick her up there. She said she would call the vet and let him know we are on our way down. She never called me back, so after about 45 minutes, I called her, she said, with no sympathy at all by the way, ” Oh he already put her to sleep, I called you three days ago and you didn’t answer so I gave him consent to put her down!” I had no idea what to say. I was sick to my stomache, and was hysterical. I hung up on her. She than called me back asking when she could get her money back and her vet bills paid! I am now not willing to pay them, am I wrong? I know the dog was hers now, and she chose to do what she wanted, but I am livid about all of this.

Oh and it turns out, the vet that put her down rescues Bull Terriers, and when the owner before me had to replace Missy, she called his office, and they said if he feels like they are not good enough show dogs, he will most likely put them down.

Should I just repay her, or stand my ground? Thanks and God bless you all!
Well I absolutely would have kept her, but have you ever had you and your fiance been in schoool full time, paying school expenses, and only getting paid a small amount? I wanted the dog to have a better home that I was giving her, do not judge me.

Dog is having hip problems?

Question by Hello!: Dog is having hip problems?
Hi all :)

I have a five year old goldendoodle who is showing signs of possible hip arthritis.

Whenever he lays down for a while, it is really hard for him to get up, and he has trouble walking up stairs. However, once he gets in to motion or has been active for a while he has no problems. His hips sometimes crack when he walks.

He gets walked once a day and plays with the neighbors dogs sometimes.

What are possible solutions to fix this? I feel bad watching him limp around somtimes. Thanks in advance!

First, lose weight. A skinny dog always has less problems with his joints than a fat one.
Second, joint supplements like glycoflex or phycox from your vet
Third a joint diet like hills JD
Fourth, a nonsteroidal aninflammatoryory that is safe for dogs– Rimadyl or Deramaxx from the Vet.

Question by Simba: At what age do dogs usually develop those “Arthritis like diseases” or Cornea problems?

Best answer:

Answer by Jessie
Arthritis can strike at any age, unfortunately. If your dog has any joint abnormalities or has broken a bone, arthritis will develop earlier than it would in other dogs of the same breed.

But most dogs get arthritis in middle to old age if they are otherwise healthy.

Managing your dog’s weight and using a glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM supplement BEFORE arthritis develops are your best preventatives. These supplements are much better at preserving joints than they are at healing them, so it’s better to start them early if you can. Limiting hard activity like jumping and running to soft surfaces can also help, especially while the dog is still growing.

Have no idea about cornea issues.

Question by Maxie: What would you do in this situation? (animal shelter problems))?
The animal shelter I’m with a lot is a “no kill”, meaning the dogs typically aren’t euthanized (yeah, right.) and they will have dogs that are there for many many months. My problem is there is a 12 year old dog that they keep putting in a small cage. Technically the dog can turn around slightly and stand (like a crate), but the dog has bad arthritis and I believe needs to be able to move to a large dog kennel ( where the dog can move around.)

The dog is 35 lbs and has been there almost a year. When in a small cage the dog has guarding behavior and gets nervous. When in a larger cage it flourishes. It is a highly profitable high turnover shelter so they do have room if they would just allow him to be in large dogs, but instead they always over load themselves, cramming dogs in too small of cages and places too many in the large runs.

Because of his age, how long he has been there, and his personality change I have begged the staff to allow him into a run and they refuse. I’m going to the board now to bring up the point not only of this dog but the over crowding, by choice. (This is not a good thing that saves lives. When they over crowded the dogs get aggressive, territorial, and are more prone to be put down or sent to sanctuaries.) Am I doing the right thing?? Help please!! The shelter is starting to not like me.
What if they ban me from volunteering?

It doesn’t matter if they don’t like you. You are the only voice this Dog has. If you walk away, you are walking away from him. Loud and clear honey! You can have a lot of backers on your side. There are tons and tons of people that would take an older dog. Eff the Shelter and not liking you. Who cares? I wouldn’t give a darn. Take a picture of him and send it out. Give him a voice.

Q&A: dog problems, help needed A.S.A.P.?

Question by yankeefan100000: dog problems, help needed A.S.A.P.?
Story is my dog got left outside in Rhode Island weather (12/4/09- 7am 12/5/00), NOONE! told me oh let the dog in shes outside, everyone that left the house or came home during the day saw her outside didnt mention anything. I didnt even let her outside damnit! now my poor dog is paying the price, she is 12 years old with arthritis in her left-hind leg. She has puked up the tiny bit of food and water i have given her. The good sign is she wants to eat/drink, but it wont stay down. Did her stomach flip?? Another thing too is she cant get up, i have had to carry her and ley her down myself, could it be from her arthritis and slowly ailing hips?? I have been laying next to her giving her body heat and 110% attention since 7 a.m., is there anything else i can do because we cant afford a vet bill, the offices are also closed on the weekends, and the pet hospital charges double on the weekends…if worse comes to worse i have chosen some expensive items to sell in order to afford the vet bill.
update**

so, one sign that has me positive is her mood. I have never seen her depressed…ever. She is such a happy dog even now. When i get up she wags her tail, or she will even just look at me and start wagging her tail randomly. She is keeping food down well now. I purchased some glucosamine tablets for the time being. My mother will be helping me pay the vet bill thank god.

The negatives are, she can walk but with much difficulty, no vet until Monday, and her breathing sounds weird at times, but still pretty stable.

well she is a tough ol’ gal, reminds me of Marley from the movie Marley and me just minus the bad behavior lol.
