Question by † Sophia †: *PLS READ! My dog’s entire hind foot is swollen and raw – taking him to the vet this afternoon?
Brief background:

My dog acted 100% normal (from what I could tell) up until yesterday when he woke up limping. He is 15 years old and does have some arthritis, so I just thought he was having a bad day. We took him for a walk and he seemed better for the rest of the day, so just assumed he had some stiff joints.

This morning, he seemed even worse. I decided to take a closer look and under his fur on his foot, his entire little paw is swollen and raw. I feel terrible because I had no idea. It must be something that aggravated quickly because again, it seems to be bothering him even more today.

I called the vet and am taking him in later this afternoon.

My worry is that it could be cancer? My dog did have a malignant tumor removed from his rear end in spring of 2008.

Do you think it could be something else that is fixable/treatable?

What do you think? Let me know if I need to supply more info…

His right hind paw is purplish-red, raw, swollen and tight. Does not appear to be oozing or weepy.

I know my vet will be able to tell me, but I’m just really nervous and upset now and would like to have some idea.

Thanks for your help.

Question by What.. EVER: Please Read: Something is wrong with my dog’s leg! Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?
First, yes, I already to him to the vet about this 2 weeks ago! And I just called an ER and the Vet called me back and said to watch him and wait til morning, then bring him in. So no “Vet” answers please!
I’m just wanting ideas of what to ask the Vet to look for if anyone has had a similar experience.

Please please read and answer?

About 2 weeks ago, when my 3 year old Bichon Frise would wake up from naps, he would kinda hop and I thought his right front paw was hurt or something, but then he would play like normal afterward. My neighbor had a Bichon before and she told me that her Bichon would pretend he was hurt to get attention, so we just chalked it up to that. But I was still worried, so I took my dog in to a vet and the vet said everything was good and A-ok.

So anyway, today (Saturday) I took my dog to the dog park so he could run free in the fenced in area. He loves that. He played and played and ran really really fast and we played fetch a long time. There was no sign at all of anything wrong with him. After 3 hours of being at the park, we went in my car. In the car he fell asleep and when we got home, he would lift his paw so I thought it was bugging him again. So I carried him to our door and then put him down.

He started limping again and barely putting weight on his front right paw. That’s when I called the ER Vet because I knew something was wrong. The ER Vet told me to keep him comfortable that it is probably a pulled muscle and to bring him in the morning. I am bringing him in this morning (Sunday) I just can’t sleep because I am so worried.

He falls asleep and then wakes up and as soon as he moves his leg, he yelps. Then when he walks, he will not put his front right paw down at all.

Does anyone know what I should make sure I ask the Vet to do or look at? I doubt it is broken because he was running on it for a long time, and I watched him like a hawk at the dog park, like I always do. He did not rough-house with the dogs, he just ran and played fetch with me more than anything else. I doubt it’s arthritis because he’s only 3 years old. But now for him to yelp and not put it down at all… I know something is going on but am not sure what. :( He does move it. But ????

Please… any ideas?
Here is my previous question about this. I thought it was his back leg but now that he is actually not wanting to use his leg, it is his front right paw. However, when I brought him in for the exam, the Vet checked all his legs. :(

Thanks “Bozema” but of course I realize no one on here can say what is wrong for sure but I am asking for people who have experienced the same thing and what they were told it was and how it turned out and also I want to make sure the Vet is more thorough this time, since they didn’t take it seriously last time.
“Cane Corso Mom”… thanks for the link to that site, I’ve been there before a long time ago. But about the luxating patellas, that only happens in the hind legs, not the front legs. So this is some other problem as it involves his right front leg. But thanks anyway. :)
Bob… the Vet did not take x-rays because his leg seemed fine at the Vet’s office and he was acting normal on it most of the time, just when he’d wake up he walked funny. They thought he just slept on it wrong. Ugh. :(

Answer by Bozema
I think the ER vet gave you the best guess. Since we aren’t vets and no one can examine the dog, it’s hard to say. Since there was no traumatic injury, it’s not likely a break. Possibly a pulled muscle, strained or torn tendon or other soft tissue injury. But only a vet can tell after an exam.

Do you think its time to put my grandma’s dog Nikki down?

I know that sounds bad, but shes a big German Shepard. She has arthritis in her back leg and shes really over weight. She’s I think 12yrs old and she just lays around. She can’t hardly get around and I know that it is going to kill my grandma to do that, but I feel bad for the dog. She look sooo sad and lonely.
Well I talked to my grandma and she said that she thinks about it everyday but she doesn’t know. She said she thinks she should ask the vet or someone else. I dunno maybe it will make her feel better.

She knows I have a yahoo answers and she asked me to ask you… Plz help us, give us your real thought on this. This dog is my grandmas best friend. And plz don’t be harsh with your answers.
Well thanx to all the ones that gave good helpful. The one of you snapping weren’t very helpful. This is hard for both me and my grandma. She has gained her weight after she got fixed, yes my grandma does spoil her, but I said thats her best friend. This IS KILLING her so thanx for being so kind….

But for other the ones that gave thoughtful ones not downgrading thanks.

She decided to talk to the vet tomorrow, I just wanted to ease her mind a bit!!

So put the dog on a diet and get her arhtritis medicine.

I bet grandmas health is not perfect either, you want to knock her off too?

Do not give the dog human emotions ’she looked sad and lonely”. That is your feelings.

Again take the dog to the vet, put her on a diet and get medicine for her arthritis.

Question by Turtle Fuzz: The Orange Rose of Andunin? Do you like this part of my work? Please read!?
I wrote a story, i know, people answered to the title of the book…the one where the girl is trying to figure out where she got these wicked awesome powers…it’s like fiction..like lord of the rings or something like that…anyway, the girl is having a dream she is back in her hometown, of Crillonia in the country of Mildon

“Areyon walked up the small hill, called Willow’s Moss, her feet squooshing in the deep green, moist moss, the willows weeping to the ground around her. Mikal smiled from the opposite side and joined Areyon near the small dirt road on the foothills of Willow’s Moss. The two laughed and chatted on their walk to Crillonia’s main market places.
They munched on some crispy fresh apples as the girls looked through each market stand. Areyon soon found herself wandering into Calvob’s stand. He flashed the silly smile he always did, but soon it disappeared…why? Was it because he knew Areyon could not take what he offered to her? His love in to her and marriage?
Dark gray overturned the baby blue sky. No one smiled at Areyon as usual, but instead, they walked away, ignoring her, running into their houses and locking the windows and doors. Even Mikal, Uncle Lobenny, Aunt Milane, and her own cousin Lumi! She was left alone in the town circle. The sky was turning red and a great black hurricane was coming right over the mountains! Suddenly, a wave of nausea hit Areyon. She began to feel more sick, as the cloud came closer to her. A foul shriek filled the air in a very hight keyed tone, like someone scraping their fingernails against a chalkboard filled Areyon’s ears. Soon, she was within a dark abyss. Her hands clutched her ears as she fell to the cobblestone shrieking in complete utter horror. Areyon’s head stung from the noise and she became sick as the darkness swallowed her whole.
A figure appeared to her, glowing a pale eerie color. It was a female and wore a black dress with red and orange words written on a black belt. Her hair was long, greasy, and jet black. Her skin appeared a faded, pale green color. She smelled like burning hair and her eyes were a piercing gray. The woman held a black staff with fire burning the top.
Areyon stood up, her hair blowing in the wind that had appeared with the ill figure. The woman grabbed Areyon’s neck and cast her to the cobblestone like a rag doll. She took her staff and pressed the burning fire to Areyons shoulder. Areyon tried to fight back, screaming in horror. She tossed aside the woman’s staff, but the woman took one of her 4 inch long fingernails, and thrust it into the burnt spot on Areyon’s shoulder. Suddenly, ugliness went over Areyon. Her dirty blond hair turned a lifeless brown color, her stormy green/blue eyes turned a dull gray, and her skin became as the ugly woman’s skin. Areyon felt the need rise in her to kill all good, living things, and at the same time, the woman disappeared.
The sky was gray and all grass was burnt. Areyon tried to imagine flowers, green grass, and clear, blue sky again..and it was there! Her tattered clothes, and herself, became beautiful and lovely again, and kindness filled her heart.
Areyon walked back to her home and happily walked through the door, to find a bloody mass of Lobenny, Milane, Lumi, and Mikal! She fell on the floor crying until it hurt, and the woman stood before her. The strange woman, held a fiery orange rose. The sight of the rose, made all pain, happen all over again. Areyon’s shoulder burned, and she wailed in agony, clutching her arm, she fainted….
Brego, the dog, licked her face,”Are you ok? You just screamed!” “I had a nightmare…a woman..black dress..black hair, and gray eyes..very green skin..she had a staff that was on fire..and she pierced me with it! Then, she had a long fingernail, and stabbed me with it. She killed my family..she had an orange rose…pain seized me again in the dream..and i fainted..”
“The Rose of Andunin!” Brego whispered. “The woman in your dream was Nyeble..I have seen her too many times..” “Nyeble? Master evil witch?” “yes..the orange rose..few people have one..they’re very rare. Very rare indeed. They’re found atop the mountain of Andunin, where Nyeble and Junaboh’s fortress is occupied. Nyeble only pierces those who are a great threat to her. Then, when they see the rose, they break down..now, if you have an orange rose, it will protect you from Nyeble.” “I have never seen Nyeble in my life!” Areyon argued. “The dream was sent to you by Nyeble herself. Your powers must be greater than you think.” “All i can do, is talk to any living thing…” “No, you can wield the power of Alina Amma..and overthrow Nyeble with those powers!” the wise dog announced….

Question by ★₤ɛasħa★: PLEASE READ! Can increasingly cold weather worsen an old dog’s arthritis?
i have a lab/american eskimo mix named Precious who is about 13 years old. She was diagnosed with hip dysplasia and arthritis/muscle deterioration of her back legs almost a year ago, but has had problems longer than that. i live in Phoenix, AZ and there were warnings out last night to put your animals inside because of the cold weather. i have a lab mix puppy who came in (we use a dog door) but Precious has not come in for the past 2 days. i literally had to put a leash on her and start dragging her in, then i saw how bad her back legs were. i woke this morning to find she has hardly moved at all where my husband carried her last night and she urinated all over her back legs because she wouldn’t even move to go to the bathroom. She wouldn’t do that unless she’s in a considerable amount of pain. i know cold/damp weather (it’s also been raining the past couple days) can make a dog’s disease worse, but can it make it this much worse? To the point where she won’t walk or anything at all?

Since the middle of December she’s lost her interest in toys and since yesterday wouldn’t eat. She has refused to come inside for the past couple days, which is not like her. Today she won’t eat, won’t drink (i took it to her and she refused), can’t stand, and is breathing deeply and slowly. i’m fearing this isn’t just the weather anymore. Anyone have experience? i’m taking her to the vet as soon as they open, but i’m expecting the worse :(

Other info:
*Vet told me to get her on arthritis medication when she was diagnosed. i couldn’t afford Cosequin so i got some typical dog joint chewables and she was getting one a day, the vet said it was fine.
*i can’t afford pain killers/Cosequin lifelong and it would be very difficult to rehome her. Is my only option to put her down if this worsened condition isn’t permanent? :,(

Take her back to the vet. I suspect your dog has gotten to the point where he quality of life is so poor its not worth prolonging her life.

Question by Cassie-Dane & Bully Breed lover: I need your advice please….and please read and/or star?
I know I’ve already asked this, but I would like more responses

ok
so I may be getting a job at a boarding kennel by my grandmas house, which is an hour and a half away from where I live (with my parents)
so I would be bringing 2 of my dogs (my dane and my mastiff) but they would have to live in the garage b/c she hates animals.
her garage is heated and she is going to get it carpeted if I have to stay here
I will also be buying a cheap couch for them

I would be able to bring Rocko to work with me, but since Meri is dog aggressive, I cant bring her
I will also have a large dog bed in there as well, Rocko is crated at night, but Meri is not

and she wont be pulling any cars in the garage either

is there any way I would be able to make them more comfortable in there? I will be spending as much time as I can with them

my other option would be staying with my aunt with them, and they could be ok in the house- but my grandma would prefer me to stay with her

but this job is not definite. I am also hoping for a job in the same town as me, working at a doggy day care

but if I take the job at the boarding kennel, they also are hoping that I would start some dog obedience classes there, and I would be having class on the days that I dont have class in my home town
the days Im not working my dogs and I will be going back to my parents house….

what do you think?
Im 18 and dont have the means of living on my own yet

Meri is also on rymadil for hip dysplasia

Answer by Get_him_Dun 04
Sounds good to me. You’re doing the right thing. But I would consider staying with my aunt if I were you. I can’t stand to be without my dogs so I would ask my aunt and if she says no then stay with grandma.

Examples of the ‘hip sway’ & ‘frog sit’ & the outward pointed toes that Elliot has been having… he has not had x-rays yet to confirm the hip dysplasia, but it’s most likely his problem. Update: Sept. 9th ‘09 we did confirm the hip dysplasia with x-rays. ANOTHER UPDATE: (as of Feb ‘10): This puppy, at 10 mos old, also has ALLERGIES, CHRONIC DIARRHEA & MULTIPLE GASTRIC UPSETS, a HEART ARRHYTHMIA, & is being evaluated for AN AUTO IMMUNE DISORDER!!!!!!! I don’t forsee him having a long or comfortable life… Anyone w/ extra money want to pay our vet bills??? lol… we’re broke & they don’t care!!! I plan on emailing them for my money back, & see what their response is in regards to this will be….. I’ll post their response here at a later date….. update 3: (5/6/2010): www.flickr.com self explanatory. i emailed the ‘breeders’. still no response. im not thinking that they are going to bother responding either. i added up our vet bills to date & they were 06.19. Elliot just turned one yr old a couple wks ago!
