Question by Stephanie: my dog is 12 and she cant get up the stair, any suggestions?
my yellow lab dog is 12 and she is my baby dog. She cant make it up the stairs anymore and has trouble walking for too long. She has hip problems and arthritis we are pretty sure, like most yellow labs develop. For the last few years we have just been having her stay on the ground floor, however now my we are moving to an upstairs apartment and I need a way to get up and down the stairs with a little more ease. My mom also needs to be able to do it while I am at college. I just tried using the Lift N Aid and bribing her with a a treat but she seems to afraid to try it. Any suggestions? Were moving in about 2 days so we need something quick hopefully! Thanks so much guys!
no worries we do take her to the vet very often! even if its a slight change we make sure everything is going well. She is an extremely happy dog as far as her mood goes. But I do agree, she does have some pain. And we have looked into the pee pads and were hoping that will work. It just might get difficult for taking her to the vet and bringing her someone if my mom has to go on a work trip. And we are giving her treats that should help with her joints, but the glucosamine seems much more promissing so maybe we can try that. But hopefully we can use a little bit of everything to make it a little easier on her. Thanks again!
And very true about the upstairs and downstairs apartment. We tried hard to get a downstairs one so it would be less of a hassle moving in and with the dog, but there were only uppers available for a very long time.

Pet/Dog Insurance??? Any suggestions, advice?

Question by msJ: Pet/Dog Insurance??? Any suggestions, advice?
I’ve got three small dogs, two pekingnese and one chihuahua. They are all adults from the age of 5-7 years old. I have been taking one of my pekingense to the vet lately for various problems, such as bladder infection, she has arthritis in the hips and knees…I am now looking for a good pet insurance for all three pets. If anyone has any good suggestions of a certain company or if any are bad pet insurance companies to deal with please advise. Thank you!

I use the vet at Petsmart, Banfield. Their basic wellness plan runs about 20 a month per dog, but age and breed makes a difference too, i think. The good thing about it is that you dont have to pay for the medical costs up front. the drawback is that you can’t take them anywhere else. with most pet insurances, you pay out of pocket, then submit a claim, and they pay you back for it about a month or so later.

Any suggestions for a arthritic dog bed?

Question by BoxerBootie ♫gone for good♫: Any suggestions for a arthritic dog bed?
I have a 12-14 yo Pom, she has arthritis in her hips and elbows. I would like to buy/make a bed for her as she can’t jump.

She likes to be covered with a blanket, while she sleeps on the high pile shag rug…and that just not the best place for her to be.

Any suggestions?

My dog had arthritis also and I bought her several different beds, but she never used any of them and preferred to sleep on the carpet and floor. They do make them and they are expensive. You could try getting some of that foam that looks like an egg carton and cover it with some high pile shag material (like the rug) maybe she will use it. Your vet can prescribe some pain medication to help manage her pain.

Suggestions on caring for a very old dog?

Question by mrbadmood: Suggestions on caring for a very old dog?
My dear Beagle is 16.5 years old and her quality of life is GOOD even though she has a heart murmur, low thyroid function, rotten teeth, arthritis in back legs, curved back, luxating patellas, cloudy eyes, near total deafness and some cognitive issues. She’s still a great companion and pretty girl though.
Does anyone have suggestions or concerns with taking care of such an old dog? I help her outside and have given her soft places to sleep and rimadyl, thorozine and glucosamine daily. Are there any other ways to make her more comfortable?

Food suggestions for old dog with skin problems?

Question by Liz: Food suggestions for old dog with skin problems?
I adopted an older dog (13+) a couple of years ago and have been managing her seasonal skin allergy and other problems since then. I”m looking for suggestions for really good dry dog food that may help, without grain fillers. Any suggestions?

A little background: She is a corgi mix with very thick chow-like hair. She may be part chow – she has a mostly-black tongue. Although she’s fifteen now and deaf, she is still lively, alert and can be very active between naps. Her skin problems have improved with frequent medicated and/or oatmeal baths, 1000 mg of omega 3 oil/day, diligent year-round flea treatment, and short “puppy” haircuts in the hot weather. BUT… she still has a lot of dandruff and occasional summer skin infections that my vet treats w/steroids and antibiotics. At her age, I’d rather she didn’t have to get steroids. SO… I’m now looking for suggestions for better dog food that may also help manage her problems. I currently feed her Nutro Senior dry dog food, and mix in a little Nutro Senior wet food. This food includes chondroitin/ glucosamine to help manage arthritis.

Thanks for any suggestions…

JAMES WELLBELOVED!!! Its an AMAZING food…brilliant for dogs with skin/health problems. Its a hypoallergenic food, with no additives preservative etc etc. It has no soya, beef, pork, wheat, dairy or eggs in it either. Its a little pricey but its well worth it! I see so many dogs come in my kennels with skin problems, and we advise the owners to put them on James Wellbeloved. The improvement is quite remarkable! It won’t sort the problem out, but it will definately help. Its not full of the rubbish that other dog food brands have either.

Also Burns is a good one!

I know of a dog that is allegic to dust mites and has had steroid injections (as he is all patchy) all his life. He is now old and suffers with stomach problems. So I really would advise against ever getting steroid treatment.

Bathing her in a tea tree shampoo will do her the world of good also.

I’d also advise looking up some herbal options for skin problems as they can help. You’d be amazed what they can do for your dog!

Question by gms1616: Wht is the BEST Rx treatment for arthritis for dogs? Pls no natural, herbal or Glucosamine suggestions.?
I have a 10 yo Chocolate Lab and has experienced serious arthritis for half her life and continues to worsen. Of course I already give her a glucosamine supplement, etc. I’ve tried Rimadyl, and even Mobic, but nothing seems to work long term or consistently. Aren’t there new injection medications out now? Thanks so much.

Q&A: Suggestions for a good breed of dog?

Question by Beth G: Suggestions for a good breed of dog?
My husband and I have two border collies and a Rottweiler/catahoula cross. Both of the border collies are best friends with the rotty, but not with each other. Unfortunately, the rotty is only 2 and has hip dysplasia to the point that we’ll have to put him down before this winter. It breaks our hearts, but the vet said he’ll really suffer when winter sets in (we’re moving to NE Cali, and winters are pretty bad).

We’re not looking to replace him, as that would be impossible. But we’re looking for a dog that might take the place of buffer between the two border collies. We need something good with kids, loyal, medium to large size, and that will be able and willing to keep up with our lifestyle. My husband cowboys in the winter and hays in the summer. Probably the most important criteria is that it be fairly “cuddly.” Our rotty thinks he’s a lapdog, and loves to snuggle, and neither of the border collies are like that. We’re looking for something that will sleep on the bed all night with us.

Serious suggestions would be appreciated, please, no jackasses. ;)
