Question by Kay: Besides, teeth- are there other ways to know your dog’s age?
so judging by his teeth- I think our new dog about 10 months-1 year old.
but he doesn’t act his age at all- I am thinking he is older, like about 3-4, maybe older. (he is very calm and obedient, never chews and almost ignores most of the toys we got him)
If his previous owners cleaned his teeth regularly, could that make them appear to be younger?

He was found on the streets and no one claimed him so we have no idea what his history is…
He is also not neutered but is very well potty trained, we haven’t had any trouble with him marking the house.

We will be taking him to the vet very soon, as he is also limps occasionally (maybe it’s arthritis?) and to get him fixed. but I just wanted some advice in the mean time.

Thanks!
*** It doesn’t matter to me if he is an older dog- He is still the perfect dog for us… I just want to know how old he is.

Question by Karyn F: Is there a cheaper dog food than Prescription Diet k/d?
My 12-year old lab mix has arthritis in her hips, shoulders and spine. She has to take Previcox which is making her kidneys work too hard. The vet suggested Hill’s Prescription Diet k/d formula. It is VERY expensive. I have a second dog (who is 3) and it is impossible to get them to eat different foods. The last bag I bought was $ 80. Is there anything else that will help her, and feed him without $ 80 per month? They are both large dogs and can eat that bag of food in less than a month. Any suggestions?

Answer by Kat
Of course your vet recommended that. They get monetary compensation from Hill’s Corp. for selling it. I’d recommend a holistic veterinarian at a reputable clinic to examine your dog’s BUN levels and determine what natural dog food and what protein content is appropriate for your dog.

Question by LizzyAlex1: What is on my dogs paw? On the corner of her paw pad there is a perfectly smooth white ball that is hard?
She’s limping on that leg for a few weeks but I thought she was getting some arthritis because she was more stiff than limping. Now today i noticed the ball on there because she is limping more. Shes an american bulldog? Does anyone know where I can find a link or maybe someone has had this with there dog? I had a dog when she was old she got benign tumors but they were never perfectly smooth or white.

hoping that there is a dog expert out there?

Question by sthang21: hoping that there is a dog expert out there?
ok, so my dog has this problem and i am so cluless as to what it might be so i am hoping his will help.
last, like 2 days she has been acting really odd. now, normally she will jump off of a chair without much hesitation at all but lately i have noticed that she is extremely scared to jump down. and our couches and chairs ar not that high up and she never had a problem before now, and keep n ind she is a little dog. so, we have tile flooring in our kitchen and i had left her on a chair for a little while just to see what ould happen, after awhile she syarted to bark and would not stop until i would help her. i wanted to tilt the chair to help coax her down. she sid off and yelped. i do not know what leg hit the floor first so i am unclear about which leg might hurt but my mom and me think that it might be her front end that is in pain. and in our living room we have a wood floor that has a carpet on top of it and the same scenario. she wnt come down without help. she has no problem jumping on our couches or the kitchen chairs fr that matter. when she is in the living room and wants down, again she will bark and be extremely scared to come down. i tossed a ball on the couch, she went after it and then just layed there. and i have also notice she seems to sleep a little more than what is normal for her. she doesnt yelp when she comes down off of things in the living room though, i thought that was a little weird. but, now re you ready for this one? she is totally normal when she walks around. she doesnt favor one leg over the oher. i also put pressure on every part of her body i can think of nd she has not yelped or pulled away from me and she is the kind of dog where if she is hurt or you hurt her she will tell you.
i thought it could be possible arthritis cause her left leg, on the shoulder always felt, i dont know what the word is, like less muscle as there. my sister thougt it may just be a phase. but i am so not sure.
no one hurt her, but i want it to be something so this way i will at least have an answer.
and i love her to pieces but i dont want to take her to the vet and get charged just t find out something may or may not be wrong. i really and truly need some major help with this!!! please!!

Question by rachelle: is there anything I can give my dog to help with his pain?
I’m pretty sure it’s just arthritis, but my dog is really sore and he can barely move. If he tries to stand up he starts whimpering. It’s so sad I want to help him, but I don’t think there’s much I can do. Can I give him ibuprofen or something?

if you need to know he’s a 10 year old, soft coated wheaten terrier.
I did massage him, and I’m going to wait another day or so before I take him to the vet. the vet usually says there’s nothing I can do that’ll be $ 5,000. and the ibuprofen I guessed he probably wouldn’t be able to take it but I just wanted to make sure

Answer by GotNewfs?
Never give Ibuprofen or Tylenol. They can be very toxic to dogs. Call your vet for some ideas. There are many medications that the vets use that help a LOT! Maybe a trip to the vet is in order!!!!!

is there any hope for my dog?

Question by Nintendo freak: is there any hope for my dog?
I’m only a kid and before I got interested in animals (age 10) it was too late for the dog to be trained. Now, three years later, my dog seems hopeless. She’s 14 and has arthritis all over the place and is almost blind. My gramma NEVER bothered to train her, so she can’t go for walks or she’ll tangle me and trip me, she knows NO tricks, doens’t respond to her name, she is obese, and she barks and bites like CRAZY. She absoulutely ATTACKS anyone else. is it too late to take back the years my gramma didn’t train her or should i just let it go? I want to put her down as a favor, but my grandma says she ‘fine’ Don’t get me wrong; I love my dog, even though it is sometimes hard to. I don’t really want her to die, but I think it would put her out of her misery to put her down. And I don’t give up easily, I have been trying to train her for 2 years but Since i have no clue what to really do, no effect.
people, this is really important. Would she have hope if I took her to one of those obidience classes at petsmart?
I LIVE WITH MY GRAMMA. SO TECHNICALLY, SHE IS MINE ALSO.

Question by Joyce: Why would a dog act like a thunder storm is coming when there is blue skies? She is old, could she be in pain?
She has arthritis about the worst x-rays I ‘ve ever seen BUT we are on medicine and have pain
med too.SO why all of a sudden do we act strange?

Best answer:

Answer by katskrtch
My dog did the same thing. It took me forever to figure out that it was the blinking green light from my router. I put painters tape over it and he was fine. Then he started going blind and now I have to keep a light on all night or he freaks out like there’s a storm comin. Since I started leaving the light on he has been fine

Question by : My dog is on Rimadyl 4 awhile, he is now having side effects, is there a better choice?
He is a pitbull and his front leg is swollen and he can’t go without meds 4 his arthritis. he is on glucosamine too. He has hot spots, runny eyes, general malaise, limping, weight loss. He is 6 years old.

Best answer:

Answer by sara
rimadyl’s side effect is that it effects the liver…not what you mentioned.

something else is going on..hot spots are normal, shave them down
and get the ointment from the vet they will go away.
funny eyes, well drops will fix that.

limping is cause his joints hurt, it’s just like people with bad knees.
what does the vet say?

if he is overweight, weight loss will be good in the long run, but you need to find out what is causing the weight loss.

i had my 120 german sherpard on rimadyl for 3 or 4 years..it cost $ 100 a month, but it made a big difference in his ability to get around.
eventually i had to have him put down when he could not walk at all and was showing a multitude of symptons by that time he was 16 and for a large dog that is a long life. still, i hated to do it but i knew he was in pain.

your dog needs some tests to see what is going on. good luck i know how expensive the vet charges are…..worse than people doctors.

now there is a fda recall on dog treats, pig ears?

Question by darlin12009: now there is a fda recall on dog treats, pig ears?
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — North Bergen, NJ — March 23, 2007 — Petrapport, Inc. is voluntarily recalling pig ear dog treats it imported from a Chilean company during the period August 2006 through December 2006 because the pig ears have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious infections in dogs, and, if there is cross contamination, young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Laboratory testing has confirmed that samples of Full-Cut Pig Ears dog treats sold by BJ’s Wholesale Club in 25-count packages under the “Berkley & Jensen” brand with no lot number and only the expiration advisory “BEST IF USED BY 2009″ (without referencing a specific month) were contaminated with Salmonella. Additional testing of other pig ear dog treats from shipments during the above time period has not revealed any additional evidence of Salmonella contamination, but Petrapport nonetheless is voluntarily recalling them out of an abundance of caution due to concern that the pig ears imported during this period may not have been effectively irradiated for Salmonella before shipment from Chile.

The voluntary recall includes dog treats sold by BJ’s Wholesale Club in its 25-count packages of “Berkley & Jensen” Full-Cut Pig Ears dog treats with no lot number and only the expiration advisories “BEST IF USED BY 2009″ (without referencing a specific month) as well as “BEST IF USED BY SEPTEMBER 2009,” “BEST IF USED BY OCTOBER 2009,” “BEST IF USED BY NOVEMBER 2009,” and “BEST IF USED BY DECEMBER 2009.”

Also included within this voluntary recall are the following lots of pig ear dog treats sold in bulk by other retailers under the “Petrapport” brand:

Salmonella can potentially be transferred to people handling these dog treats, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the product or any surfaces exposed to these products. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Dogs that become ill from Salmonella generally will have a fever and diarrhea that may contain blood or mucus. Affected animals may seem more tired that usual, and may have vomiting. Some dogs do not have diarrhea, but will have decreased appetite, fever and excess salivation. If your dog has consumed the recalled product and is exhibiting these signs, please contact your veterinarian.

While there have been no confirmed illnesses to date, consumers should immediately stop feeding these treats to their dogs. These products have been removed from the sales floors and the sales inventories of all retailers.

Consumers who purchased any of the above-identified pig ear dog treats should discontinue use of the products and may return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Consumers who have further questions may contact Petrapport at 800-447-3872 extension 110.
