Natural treatments for oral melanoma in dogs?

Question by Dances With Woofs!: Natural treatments for oral melanoma in dogs?
My cousin just called me to tell me that her 12-year-old Golden Retriever,Hannah, has been diagnosed with oral melanoma. The vet gives her about three months.I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this ,and if so,if you know of any natural treatments that may slow or stop the spread of the cancer. It is at the base of her throat. She has some arthritis, but is otherwise healthy. TY in advance.
Yes,I know that Goldens get cancer a lot. There is an experimental vaccine being tested at Ohio State, but it costs thousnads of dollars and is not proven. We were just hoping that someone might have tried something and had some success.

I am sorry about your cousin’s dog. There are not any natural ways that have be proven to stop the spread of this cancer. GR are the number 2 dog for getting cancer, boxers being the number 1. If your cousin is not getting any ideas from her vet, she can be referred to a veterinary oncologist. If the growth is inoperable, they may have a chemotherapy regime that may fit her lifestyle.

Question by Martina: What are the best treatments for canine arthritis? What has worked for you?
The dog is a 12 year old purebred Yellow Lab.
Thanks for your advice! I agree with making him comfortable. He has all his food/water elevated. He has a choice of orthopedic beds to rest on. He takes everything at his own pace. I have been using DGP vitamin supplements and the vet recommended Tramadol (sp). He isn’t injured, he is just old. He can’t take Rimadyl because he’s been on potassium bromide for seizures since he was 6 months old. Thanks, again for sharing!!!

I had a border collie/retriever mix that around age 11 started having significant problems with arthritis. A combination of Rimadyl, glucosamine supplements and soft bedding (which she already had) was literally life-changing for her. Rimadyl has side effects and dogs need to be monitored while on it – but I truly believe this drug extended her life several years. She lived a happy life to age 15.

Advice on Hip Dysplasia treatments please?

Hi,

My 8 month old American Bulldog definitely has Hip Dysplasia :( we got x-rays taken and could see how bad it is (it’s pretty bad) and that he already has arthritis forming. We are going to treat this but I don’t know which route to choose; there are several different surgeries out there and I have a couple in mind I would like to do, I think.

I would like to hear what you treatment you have done with your dog – surgery, medication, suppliments and lifestyle choices – and how they worked out for you.

Were you happy with the surgery you choose? Was you dog able to walk/stand/play ‘normally’ after? Which supplements have shown better results in your dog?

I want this done right for my dog and would love to hear your stories! Thanks from me and Malik!

p.s. any recommendations for fantastic surgeons in the upper mid-west?

Stem cell dog hip dysplasia treatments?

My dog had a horrible life before I adopted him. A few weeks ago I discovered that he was used as target practice. One of the shot fractured his acetabulum and it tried to regenerate itself leaving it much thinner and misshapen. He is already on Rimadyl and 1g (2 x 500mg) of glucosamine per day and he is still in pain. It is obvious that I need to do something because he is only 3.5 years old and this is no way to live. The hip replacement will cost me $5000, however, there are new treatments using stem cells isolated from the dog’s fat cells that will only cost $1250. It will take me several months to save for this procedure and several years for the other. Since this treatment does not regenerate bone, is a permanent solution? Will I have to get the same treatment again for him in the future? Will this alleviate his arthritis? Thank you for your time.
