Question by Ashers: My 13 y/o dog can barely walk, and she’s throwing up. What’s wrong?
My dad told me today that my thirteen-year-old dog (a yellow lab/collie mix, we think) couldn’t walk at all yesterday. He carried her inside (she’s an outside dog), and tried to get her to walk, but she’d fall down. She slept out on the deck last night, but was even worse this morning. She’ll only eat treats and such and hasn’t been able to go to the bathroom. My dad’s taking her to the vet this week, but we’d like to know a little in advance. She’s always had some difficulty moving for a while due to her arthritis, but it’s never been like this before. I’m really worried about her- I’ve had her since I was only four- and I’d like to know what to expect. So if anyone has any information or experience with this, please let me know soon. Thanks!

This sounds like a VERY serious problem. It could be a large number of things. She is rather old so Arthritis is a possibility. The quicker you can get her to the vet, the better. But it sounds like she doesnt have that long left. Good luck.

Question by Cathleen: Please help!: My dog can’t walk anymore and we can’t afford to take her to the emergency vet clinic?
My dog is an English Pointer who is 12 years-old. She is a healthy dog, but has had arthritis for the past year. Lately she has been having difficulty getting up and sitting down. She has also been getting tired a lot quicker when I walk her.
Every time she tries to stand up her hind legs give out and she falls. My parents can’t afford to taker her to the vet… what can I do for her?!
It’s not my fault! I am a teenager and don’t have any money. We’re about to lose our house as it is. It’s my parents who I need to convince…

Find a way, the absolute only way to not let this dog suffer is medication. Only a vet can prescribe. Arthritis happens over time, it doesnt just pop up, surely your parents knew she would need medication.
I know its hard times out there, but when you have an animal you cannot simply let it suffer. Please take her to the vet in the am. Call the vet at least and explain, maybe someone in good nature will help you.

Question by Mountaineer Rocker: My dog can’t walk up stairs, but he can walk around a flat surface fine.?
My Peekapoo is 14 years old.
He can walk around the house (flat surfaces) fine, but he can’t walk up stairs.
He also doesn’t let me or my family help him up and growls at us when we try…
Would this be arthritis?
If so, how would I help treat this, if possible?
I don’t think he’s growling because of slipping on the stairs and being hurt, because he’s been like this since he was about 4-5.

Yes, it sounds like arthritis. Take the dog to your vet to get x-rays to confirm the diagnosis and to make sure it is nothing more serious than arthritis. If it si just arthritis, your vet can give you pain medication for you animal. DO NOT give any ibuprofen or acetaminophen (advil or tylenol). They are EXTREMELY toxic to animals. Don’t give any aspirin until you speak with our vet about whether it is safe for your dog (it can cause intestinal bleeding in some animals.)

Question by charlieandthechocolatefactory: my dog is limping and i dont know what to do… he can run and walk but on only 3 legs…….. help!!!?
I have a 7 year old chow/wolf mix and he has been limping for a while. he ways about 150lbs, and eats a good portion of neutriants every day. He is a family pet and we havbe taken him to several doctors, but they all said it was nothing to worry about. The last time a vet told me that i lost my 3 year old border collie.. you can see why i dont trust there diagnosis. I have a close freind that did a project for her ap class on hip dysplayshia in different breeds of dogs and chow chows, and wolves are at the low raking score. so i highly doubt that it could be H.D.
Theres is also a possability of arthritis but it is very slim. his conditions seem to get worse and then better periodicly, but it has started to beacome worse and cause him to take a while to recouperate. I any of you face or have faced the same challenge as I please let me know. I would never think of amputating his leg (only if totaly necissary), so please try to obstain from advision so.
By the way im 13.. so bnice C.

Why would you amputate his leg? You need to find a vet you trust. Why is it you taking the dog to the vet? Maybe your parents should handle this. You should have the dog X rayed to see what is wrong.

Question by Tierra: How long will my dog be able to walk?
My 1.5 year old puppy has just been dianoised with Elbow Dysplasia in both her front elbow with severe arthritis. She is on the highest does of rimadyl that can be given before internal organ damage starts to occur and she is now able to walk without limping.
There is no surgical option as the arthritis is to severe.
My question is how long will my dog be able to walk for if anyone has experience with this problem.
And has anyone used the drug called Adequan to treat the dysplasia.
we have spoken with a specialist and are in the process of getting her an apt. We have so far been to the vet for her more times then we can count but I want to get some advice from dog owners who have had to deal with this problem. Thanks for the advice

You might want to check with another vet or a orthopedic specialist. The usual surgery for dogs with elbow dysplasia is arthroscopy, which is a specialized type of surgery involving cutting directly into the elbow joint. Not all canine veterinarians can perform arthroscopy, so the dog may have to be referred to another veterinarian.
Medications for canine elbow dysplasia include the NSAID painkillers aspirin and Rimadyl and a type of arthritis medication called chondroprotectants such as Adequan (the brand name for polysulfated glycosaminoglycan). When just using medications, it can take up to one month before the dog shows any sign of feeling better.
You can also use nutritional supplements like glucosamine chondroitin sulphate which aid in the production of joint fluid.
I don’t know about Adequan for dogs, but it has been very successfully used in the treatment of horses.
In addition to surgical and medical treatments, the dog should be put on a diet. Overweight dogs can damage already problematic joints.

He needs to see a vet. This sounds VERY serious. It’s not arthritis. I’m sure you can find a vet somewhere. YOu may have to drive a bit but surely it’s worth it for your dog. If you don’t take hin to a vet he will continue to suffer and may even die. If you are unable to get him vet care please call local animal control or a Humane Society for help.

Question by ceallaigh123: My dog can barely walk after hiking or swimming…?
Could this be arthritis? I take my dog hiking up strenuous rocky hills, and swimming in the lake and she loves it. She is a lab mix, and it takes a lot for her to get tired. She practically runs up these boulders. When we get home she usually sleeps, on our bed or on the couch. When I get her up to eat or go outside she can barely walk or stand. I usually have to pick her up and carry her off the bed, or down the stairs to go to the bathrooms. Then she is ok a day or two later and is anxious to walk more. I have made appointments for the vet before but canceled because of her improvement. Now it’s bad again. What could this be? It’s definitely her back legs too….
I am absolutley NOT overworking her at all. I know how much she can handle. She just turned 5. She is way ahead of me and cries when it’s time to get in the car and go. Over working her is not even in the cards here….
Also, I don’t know if this has anything to do with it but her legs are hard as rock, muscle wise. My vet has complimented the strength in her back legs….

I’m suspicious of hip dysplasia. See your vet.
