Q&A: What do you think is wrong with my dog?

Question by abmayfie: What do you think is wrong with my dog?
My dog was hit by an SUV about 3 months ago. He ran out of my backyard and was hit by the front and rear tires of a car speeding down my street. We rushed him to the emergency vet thinking the worst and about an hour (and $ 600) later, he came out of the back of the vet with only a cut on his back leg.

About a month after that, he got up from a nap and I noticed that he was holding his head down and walking weird. I went to pick him up and he was very stiff and whining. Rather than take him to the emergency vet, I decided to wait until the next day so it wouldn’t be so expensive. He was lying on his bed and sleeping and only whining when he had to walk, so I crated him for the night. The next morning when I got up to take him, it was like nothing was ever wrong with him. He was running all over the house like a crazy dog (normal activity :) ). I assumed he was stung by a bee because we had an issue with some in our back yard the day before.

About 2 weeks ago, he did the same thing. It’s weird because his body kind of tenses so that it’s curved and he holds his head to the left. He’s fine as long as he is lying down and not moving, but if you try to move him he starts to whine. Again, after sleeping in his crate overnight and limiting his activity he was fine the next day. This time I can’t blame it on a bee because we took care of the bee problem outside. If it happens again, I have every intention of bringing him to the vet, but I’m just wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what it could be. Maybe doggie arthritis because of the run-in with the SUV? He’s not sick any other way – eating and drinking perfectly fine and still running around like nothing is wrong.
Like I said, I have every intention of taking him to the vet if it happens again – taking him while there’s nothing wrong with him will do no good -he’s not in any pain right now at all. I have no problem spending the money on him and am just curious to see if anyone else has an idea of what it could be.

whats wrong with my dog, is she depressed?

Question by BabyCakes: whats wrong with my dog, is she depressed?
okay so i have a maltese, shes nine years olds. lately i’ve noticed shes been acting really wierd. all she does is mope around all day. sometimes when i pick her up she’ll yelp reallly loud as if shes in pain. or if im holding her she’ll start growling.(growling for her is normal though she always does that) but then the growl will end in a really loud yelp. im concerned cuz shes usuallly not like this. and a lot of the time during the day or at night she’ll just sit there staring off into space crying. she doesnt really have that many health problems. she does have arthritis in one of her back legs. (i dont remember wich one) but she isnt limping or anything. she does tend to shake her butt a lot when shes walking tho. (it sounds silly but she does). can some please tell me whats wrong with my dog? also, sometimes when we pick her up she also yelps loudly.
help.
thanks!
my mom tried giving her like a massage to try to see from where her pain is coming from but my dog didnt yelp or anything. and shes not on any medication for her arthritis, when the vet told us she had it he said it wasnt that advance enough to put her on medication at the moment. but that in a couple years she might start limping and that then she might need some. that was a couple years a go. but shes not limping. oh! and for somereason she wont jump onto my bed anymore she just looks at me whith sad eyes like she cant.

You need to take her to the vet immediately. Her yelps and constant crying are a sign that she’s in main, probably sprouting from her midsection area.
Dogs tend to hide pain as much as they can, so when they start crying out in pain, something is really, really hurting them.

what’s wrong w/ my boxer dog?

Question by Dare to ask?: what’s wrong w/ my boxer dog?
i have had my boxer dog for about 7 years now.
this year he started showing signs of his legs kinda hurting…but it’s been off and on it’s only occurred 2 or 3 times in the cold months and we figured it was early signs of arthritis. the limbing would only last a day then he would be fine the next day. i started walking him more because i thought it would help lubricate his joints if in fact it is arthritis. he has been fine for the past few months then last night he got off the sofa from sleeping and looked like he was going to throw up then he almost fell…i thought his blood sugar was low so instead of feeding him again i changed his water and gave him some dry food and lunch meat. he ate the lunch meat and seem to be fine after that. today i see a blister like thing on his leg….what could be wrong w/ him?
i agree to take him out of his pain but this only happened once. i think he is only affected when it is cold out. he doesn’t seem to be in pain anymore. if it is the bones do walks really help? i walk him every night just about…keep in mind even in the cold and rain and snow but sometimes i do slip up and he will mis a walk or two out of a week. he has a mark on his leg but i can’t think of how he could have gotten that. it looks like a blister. he now pays no mind to it and walks fine. does anyone know the avg. age for a boxer?

Question by Ashers: My 13 y/o dog can barely walk, and she’s throwing up. What’s wrong?
My dad told me today that my thirteen-year-old dog (a yellow lab/collie mix, we think) couldn’t walk at all yesterday. He carried her inside (she’s an outside dog), and tried to get her to walk, but she’d fall down. She slept out on the deck last night, but was even worse this morning. She’ll only eat treats and such and hasn’t been able to go to the bathroom. My dad’s taking her to the vet this week, but we’d like to know a little in advance. She’s always had some difficulty moving for a while due to her arthritis, but it’s never been like this before. I’m really worried about her- I’ve had her since I was only four- and I’d like to know what to expect. So if anyone has any information or experience with this, please let me know soon. Thanks!

This sounds like a VERY serious problem. It could be a large number of things. She is rather old so Arthritis is a possibility. The quicker you can get her to the vet, the better. But it sounds like she doesnt have that long left. Good luck.

Question by ranlbundy: why do so many people think it is wrong to carry My dog in a puppy-bag / Purse?
Why do so many people think it is wrong to carry a dog in a purse / bag?
before people judge, please know all the facts.
The Facts :
Our Nina is a very tiny mutt. That’s her picture in my profile.
She is a 4 year old ,3 lb 7oz Chihuahua/Mini Dachshund mix. {Chi-weenie for those who like Labels, like My daughter ha ha}
My Nina was adopted from a rescue at 8 weeks old and weighed 6 ounces. She goes to the dog park every Sunday, {weather permitting } and runs around ,chases her ball, plays with other dogs and Kids. she is walked twice a day. 1st thing in the AM and again in the PM. she uses a puppy litter box while I am at work. {cats are not the only ones that use them}
She was diagnosed with arthritis in her left hip and has a bad knee. I give her strengthening exercises/ physical therapy at home and she takes an Rx for her arthritis and knee. But, with her health issue and her tiny little legs getting tired so fast or there is 4 feet of snow outside….why not carry her in the puppy-purse?
She actually loves it. If she sees ANY purse that is a little bit big,she tries to crawl in to it. which is very funny but we really have to watch her around other peoples handbags.
So I do not see the problem. And I am tired of the dirty looks strangers give me when we are out somewhere. I honestly do not understand why so many people are so bothered by this.

So I ask again…Why is it wrong for Me to carry my dog in a Puppy-Purse ?
I just wanted to add..I NEVER take her in restaurants. not even a fast food drive up. She’s a Very clean dog! I wipe her paws with a wet cloth after every walk so she does not lick her paws and get sick from anything she might have stepped in., like anti-freeze or pesticides. She is wiped down with a warm, damp cloth every day to get rid of excess hair & dirt. She’s well mannered , does not yip or snap at strangers. she loves all people. I do NOT take her in to the grocery stores or anything like that. Normally, I only take her somewhere that allows dogs. And if I go to someones home,I always ask ahead if she’s welcome.
As for allergies,All the places I take her, are dog friendly. So they shouldn’t be there if they know they are allergic. I try hard not to be rude or inconsiderate .Sorry.
Also, her Bag is made for Dogs. it is not a regular purse.

What is wrong with this shelter dog? Help!?

Question by Maxie: What is wrong with this shelter dog? Help!?
I volunteer at a shelter. I walked to a dog I normally see and the dog was laying down and looked exhausted. I got the dog out of the kennel and walked him outside. I pet him and he started whining. I decided to head back and he set down, not moving. He looked a little out of it. Afterwards he laid down and stared off before closing his eyes. I ran to the shelter staff and all they said was the dog must have had arthritis. I wondered if it was a seizure, but I don’t know! I kept telling them I did not think it was just arthritis. Please help, what does it sound like to you???
I got him back in the kennel and he still looked bad. Can arthritis REALLY do all of this? The closing of the eyes and glazed look is what really worried me
The dog is old and has been there a long time. The weather has been changing a lot which is what the excuse was from the staff. I did report it in writing so hopefully it will be looked at. All they wanted to do was tell the vet that his leg hurt.
I thought the dog was dieing, I started crying and I got repremanded saying I shouldn’t have kept walking him (which I didn’t, he went inside right away.) I’ve never heard of a dog just randomly doing this. I walked him YESTERDAY and he was fine. :(
Thank you all that responded so far. I suspect there is something serious wrong with him, too. I am concerned they will put him down, even though it is a shelter that is not known for doing that — they will sometimes. I would take the dog, but am unable to at this time. If there is something massive wrong with him I couldn’t afford to get him expensive treatments (which is a major reason I have not tried) I have tried to get him adopted, but he doesn’t show well because he barks a lot
Also, I walk him once when I go. It isn’t very far and he never acted like this. To my knowledge no other staff or volunteers with the exception of one other person walks him.
We had an outbreak of distemper at the shelter could it be that?

The fact the dog was in pain BEFORE you took him out should be reported, there’s probably something else going on.

What’s wrong with my dog’s paw?

Question by Molly K: What’s wrong with my dog’s paw?
When I take my dog out for a walk, we always play fetch downhill with a launch and tennis ball. I try not to over work her, but she comes home with a sore front paw each time. I take her for normal runs with just a frisbee sometimes as well but she still gets sore paws! Is it arthritis?! Please, I’m worried.
She is an Australian Shepherd.

Have you checked the soles of her paws, she might have something in there that is hurting her everytime she walks

Question by What.. EVER: Please Read: Something is wrong with my dog’s leg! Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?
First, yes, I already to him to the vet about this 2 weeks ago! And I just called an ER and the Vet called me back and said to watch him and wait til morning, then bring him in. So no “Vet” answers please!
I’m just wanting ideas of what to ask the Vet to look for if anyone has had a similar experience.

Please please read and answer?

About 2 weeks ago, when my 3 year old Bichon Frise would wake up from naps, he would kinda hop and I thought his right front paw was hurt or something, but then he would play like normal afterward. My neighbor had a Bichon before and she told me that her Bichon would pretend he was hurt to get attention, so we just chalked it up to that. But I was still worried, so I took my dog in to a vet and the vet said everything was good and A-ok.

So anyway, today (Saturday) I took my dog to the dog park so he could run free in the fenced in area. He loves that. He played and played and ran really really fast and we played fetch a long time. There was no sign at all of anything wrong with him. After 3 hours of being at the park, we went in my car. In the car he fell asleep and when we got home, he would lift his paw so I thought it was bugging him again. So I carried him to our door and then put him down.

He started limping again and barely putting weight on his front right paw. That’s when I called the ER Vet because I knew something was wrong. The ER Vet told me to keep him comfortable that it is probably a pulled muscle and to bring him in the morning. I am bringing him in this morning (Sunday) I just can’t sleep because I am so worried.

He falls asleep and then wakes up and as soon as he moves his leg, he yelps. Then when he walks, he will not put his front right paw down at all.

Does anyone know what I should make sure I ask the Vet to do or look at? I doubt it is broken because he was running on it for a long time, and I watched him like a hawk at the dog park, like I always do. He did not rough-house with the dogs, he just ran and played fetch with me more than anything else. I doubt it’s arthritis because he’s only 3 years old. But now for him to yelp and not put it down at all… I know something is going on but am not sure what. :( He does move it. But ????

Please… any ideas?
Here is my previous question about this. I thought it was his back leg but now that he is actually not wanting to use his leg, it is his front right paw. However, when I brought him in for the exam, the Vet checked all his legs. :(

Thanks “Bozema” but of course I realize no one on here can say what is wrong for sure but I am asking for people who have experienced the same thing and what they were told it was and how it turned out and also I want to make sure the Vet is more thorough this time, since they didn’t take it seriously last time.
“Cane Corso Mom”… thanks for the link to that site, I’ve been there before a long time ago. But about the luxating patellas, that only happens in the hind legs, not the front legs. So this is some other problem as it involves his right front leg. But thanks anyway. :)
Bob… the Vet did not take x-rays because his leg seemed fine at the Vet’s office and he was acting normal on it most of the time, just when he’d wake up he walked funny. They thought he just slept on it wrong. Ugh. :(

Answer by Bozema
I think the ER vet gave you the best guess. Since we aren’t vets and no one can examine the dog, it’s hard to say. Since there was no traumatic injury, it’s not likely a break. Possibly a pulled muscle, strained or torn tendon or other soft tissue injury. But only a vet can tell after an exam.

Q&A: is something wrong with my dog?

Question by haley19jsb: is something wrong with my dog?
my dog who is normally very active dog has been acting kinda funny lately, she’s drooling and seems really tired and will move very little. she’s a German Shepard. has minor arthritis and normally the cold weather bothers her,and it was warm for a while and now it’s pretty cold,is something seriously wrong with her or is it just her arthritis?

Answer by Cathy R
Take her to the vet!!! It may be something as simple as dehydration but you have to have her checked out in case it is something more. Any change in a dog’s behavior warrents a trip to the vet.
