What is the best brand/company for Glucosamine vitamin?
Question by alegna: What is the best brand/company for Glucosamine vitamin?
My dog was diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia two months ago. The vet said it’s at a moderate stage, so I started her on glucosamine vitamins. (The vet bill just to perform x-rays and tests was tremendous!! almost one thousand. But that is the responsibility that comes with having a pet! ) I informed the vet that I purchased glucosamine vitamins them over the counter at the pet store, he didn’t offer any recommendations when I told him that I was giving her glucosamine vitamins.
So for the last two months, I have been giving my dog “NaturVet” Glucosamine DS Time Release with MSM and Chondrotin. I also supplement her with NuturVet multi-vitamins for adult dogs.
I was wondering if anyone knows what company or brand of vitamins are quality vitamins and work effectively for a pet.
My dog has been a lot better since I first noticed symptoms of her hip problem, she showed a lot of pain in the beginning, but now she seems fine other than that she can’t jump or play vigourously anymore.
She has Rimadyl when I feel that she is in pain.
Hopfully the glucosamine and vitamins that I give her slows down the hip dysplasia. I feel that it does, but who knows, miracles happen : )

Syn flex I have been giving my 18 year old cat syn flex for quite a long time. At one point before I started giving it to her she had arthritis so bad that she could barely move. It is good for cats and dogs and humans. Syn flex is a liquid and contains glucosamine, boswellin, shark cartilage, omega 3 and yucca. Its is a bit expensive but it lasts a long time.

Also I think Syn flex is good to prevent future problems.

Cosaquin and Chondroflex are both excellent.
Glucosamine is Glucosamine, you just dose by body weight. You could buy tablets or powder at the Walgreens or health food store, like vitamin cottage, ITS THE SAME THING, there is no “special” dog glucosamine.Just take the bottle of “dog” Glu. with you and read the ingreds., Most times human grade Suppliments are better anyway because they don’t use as many artificial flavorings and junk.
(My vet told me this, so it must be so.)
Cosequin is the only one PROVEN to work. You can also buy the human equivalent, made by the same company, and with the same ingredients. It is called Cosamin DS and it is cheapest at Wal-Mart and much cheaper than the animal formulation! My vet told me this, and here is a link to the website. Also, you are wise to only give the Rimadyl when she is in pain,as it is bad on the liver. Salmon oil is good for the joints as well.

They also have new product, called Dasuquin, that is supposed to be even better.

Goto Costo and get your Glucosamine. It is the cheapest game in town. I do it for my dogs and for myself, I have arthritis in my knees.
Any human grade glucosamine is fine – Walmart has it pretty cheap, you give by body weight of the dog.
By the way, Rimadyl is pretty hard on the dog if you have to give it a lot. My dog has join problems and my vet prescribed Metacam- it works well on pain like that and has fewer side effects than Rimadyl. Metacam can be given every day, long term. It costs a bit more, but it is safer.
I am surprised your dog is not on prednisone or some other steriod – unless he was initially and is now off it – that’s not good long term at all, but makes a big difference at first just to help the dog get over the worst of dysplasia.
Good luck – check out Metacam, but don’t worry about the brand in the case of glucosamine – any human grade is good.
